A Word from the Pastor

May 17, 2024

The Solemnity of Pentecost is one of the great feasts of the Church. But what is the meaning of Pentecost, as revealed in the Catholic Church's teachings?

Pentecost is the fulfillment of the Paschal Mystery - the death, resurrection, and ascension of

Jesus Christ. It marks the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles and the birth of the Church. Thus, liturgically it marks the end of the Easter season.

The Holy Spirit descends upon the disciples, uniting them in truth and communion, and empowering them for their mission to the world. Pentecost is the “convincing manifestation of Easter to all the nations,” as the disciples are filled with the Spirit and begin proclaiming “the mighty acts of God” in various languages.

Through the gift of the Holy Spirit, the Church is established as the work of the Spirit, “one, holy, catholic and apostolic.” The Spirit guides the Church in truth, strengthens her in faith, and prompts her to service and mission.

The Holy Spirit is the “soul of mission,” drawing us into the mystery of the living God and impelling us to open the doors and go forth to proclaim and bear witness to the Gospel, communicating the joy of faith and the encounter with Christ. The Spirit makes us look to the

horizon and drives us to the very outskirts of existence in order to proclaim life in Jesus Christ to every corner of the world.

Pentecost thus represents the fulfillment of Christ's promise to send the Spirit, who will lead the

disciples into all truth and empower them for their evangelizing task. The Eucharist celebrated on Pentecost becomes the “Pentecost event” for the faithful, as they receive the Body and Blood of Christ and are filled anew with the Holy Spirit.

We rejoice in this gift of the Holy Spirit who enlivens our faith, heals our divisions and impels us to continue the mission of Jesus.

Come, Holy Spirit, and fill the hearts of your faithful people. Enkindle within us the fire of your love. Send us forth by your Spirit so that through us you will renew the face of the earth.

In one Heart,

Fr. Ron

Wear Red for Pentecost

The Solemnity of Pentecost marks the end of the Easter season. We celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples gathered together in fear. They became courageous witnesses.

One of the great signs of the presence of the Spirit on that day was the tongues of fire that appeared over each person. That’s one of the reasons RED is the liturgical color for this solemnity. The vestments and liturgical décor are resplendent with red. To carry the theme through the whole congregation, we invite you to wear red to church on Pentecost, this Sunday, May 19. Your presence in whatever red clothes or accessories you may have will add to the festivity of our celebration.

Veni Creator Spiritus

These traditional words from Pentecost Sunday are put in a more modern setting by Fr. Manoling Francisco, SJ (colleague of Fr. Ron in the Philippines), and performed by Bukas Palad Music Ministry From the album Behold the Risen Lord

Preparing for the 2025 Jubilee Year

Every 25 or 50 years, the Church celebrates a Jubilee Year. It is a time of renewal, prayer and pilgrimages. The year 2025 will be such a Jubilee Year and Pope Francis has given it the theme of Hope.

Attached is an overview of the “Bull of Indiction” that Pope Francis recently issued. In it he explains the theme of the Jubilee Year as well as some of its features. This summary was written by Elise Anne Allen and appeared recently in Cruxnow.com

Gospel Reading

John 20:19-23

Background on the Gospel Reading

The season of Easter concludes with today’s celebration, the feast of Pentecost. On Pentecost we celebrate the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles gathered in the upper room in Jerusalem; this event marks the beginning of the Church. The story of Pentecost is found in the Acts of the Apostles, today’s first reading. The account in today’s Gospel, John 20:19-23, also recounts how Jesus gave the gift of the Holy Spirit to his disciples. Yet the event in John’s Gospel takes place on Easter Sunday. There is no need to try to reconcile these two accounts. It is best we know that after his death, Jesus fulfilled his promise to send to his disciples a helper, an Advocate, who would enable them to be his witnesses throughout the world.

In the context of the feast of Pentecost, John 20:19-23 reminds us about the integral connection between the gifts of peace and forgiveness and the action of the Holy Spirit. Jesus greets his disciples with the gift of peace. Jesus then commissions his disciples to continue the work that he has begun: “As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” He breathes the Holy Spirit upon the disciples and sends them to continue his work of reconciliation through the forgiveness of sins. Jesus’ act of breathing the Holy Spirit upon the apostles mirrors God’s act of breathing life into Adam. In fact, both the Greek and Hebrew words for “spirit” can also be translated as “breath.” This Gospel reminds us that the Church is called to be a reconciling presence in the world. The reconciling presence of Christ is celebrated in the Church’s sacramental life. In the Sacrament of Baptism, we are cleansed of sin and become a new creation in Christ. In the Sacrament of Penance, the Church celebrates the mercy of God through the forgiveness of sins. This reconciling presence is also to be a way of life for Christians. In situations of conflict, we are to be agents of peace and harmony among people.
