"Hedy Lamarr: Stolen Legacy" Film Talk with Frank Mandosa

Stop in at 6:30 p.m. on Wed., Jan. 24 for a film talk by expert Frank Mandosa on Hedy Lamarr. He'll present a look at the life and career of Lamarr, who declined roles in "Casablanca," "Laura," and "Gaslight." At one point, her studio bosses restricted her to selling kisses for war bonds during WWII.

Instead, she invented a covert communication system to help defeat the Nazis; it's the very technology we use today for secure Wi-Fi, GPS, and Bluetooth.

Frank will show slides with film clips, some with interactive trivia questions. There'll also be a photo display, and raffle for a chance to win a movie-themed door prize.

Thanks to the Friends of the Middleborough Public Library for sponsoring this film talk.

Michael Maddigan's New Book

Local historian Michael Maddigan has written a new book, Bay State Straw Works: A History & Neighborhood Guide, but you won't have to come into the Library to check it out.

It's currently only available in digital format and you can find this edition with lots of beautiful photographs and artwork right here on our website.

Unfamiliar with this part of Middleboro's history?

Read ahead for Maddigan's introduction to the book, to learn more:

"For a period of 60 years between 1835 and 1895 the manufacture of straw hats and bonnets was the predominant industry in Middleborough. The producer of these articles, the Bay State Straw Works on Courtland Street, was the community’s largest employer in the period immediately following the Civil War, providing employment to hundreds of individuals both in town and throughout the region...While the Bay State Straw Works is long gone, vestiges of the operation remain in the form of extant portions of the original manufactory as well as the numerous residential structures remaining in the vicinity of Courtland Street which were once occupied by the operatives and owners of the straw works."

Your Retirement: Dream or Disaster? How to Avoid the Hidden Traps in Retirement Planning Advice, Tues., Jan. 23, 2:00 p.m. (VIRTUAL)

Start your New Year off right by logging on and learning how to avoid the hidden traps in retirement planning advice.

Did you know that a large financial portfolio, an estate plan, and long-term care insurance won’t be enough to prevent your dream retirement from becoming a disaster? Maybe you know someone who was forced into institutional care after a health crisis and lost assets due to unplanned medical and long-term care costs, or became a burden to loved ones.

According to Elder Law Attorney and bestselling author Rajiv Nagaich, these results are called “retirement plan failure.” Over his 20-plus years of experience in US elder law, Rajiv has developed a step-by-step guide to retirement planning by connecting the various dots of the retirement planning process.

Nagaich, author of Your Retirement: Dream or Disaster, is an elder law attorney, speaker, and retirement planning visionary. He hosts two popular public television specials (Master Your Future and The Path to Happily Ever After) and the AgingOptions Radio Show, dispensing retirement planning advice to people in the Pacific Northwest.

The Lure and the Lies of Processed Food, Nutrition, and Modern Medicine: A VIRTUAL Author Talk with Dr. Robert Lustig, Tues., Jan. 30, 2:00 p.m.

Launch your New Year off right with Dr. Robert Lustig, a pediatric neuroendocrinologist who has long been on the cutting edge of medicine and science. He challenges our current healthcare paradigm which has gone off the rails under the influence of Big Food, Big Pharma, and Big Government.

Dr. Lustig’s book, Metabolical: The Lure and the Lies of Processed Food, Nutrition, and Modern Medicine, weaves the interconnected strands of nutrition, health/disease, medicine, environment, and society into a completely new fabric. He insists that if we do not fix our food and change the way we eat, we will continue to court chronic disease, bankrupt healthcare, and threaten the planet.

Robert H. Lustig, M.D., M.S.L. is an Emeritus Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology and a member of the Institute for Health Policy Studies at UCSF, and has expertise in metabolism, obesity, and nutrition. He's dedicated his retirement from clinical medicine to help fix the food supply in any way he can, to reduce human suffering, and to salvage the environment. He also is the author of Fat Chance and The Hacking of the American Mind.
