A LETTER FROM BISHOP MICHAEL MARTIN

It is with great sadness and trust in God that we announce the death of Msgr. Anthony Marcaccio, Pastor of St. Pius X Parish in Greensboro, NC. He was 61.

Msgr. Marcaccio had experienced some health difficulties earlier this year, and most recently while being treated, a rather complex cancer was discovered. He had gone to Chicago last week for a specialist surgery that had initially achieved the hoped for outcome. However, in the last 24 hours complications arose in the aftermath of the surgery. Late last night some of his major organs began to be impacted and he suffered a cardiac event that left him in a very compromised physical condition. His body was simply not strong enough to respond to medical interventions, and he died earlier today with his family and friends at his side.

All who knew him are impacted by this news and left with deep feelings of loss and sadness. To know Msgr. Marcaccio was to appreciate that the last thing he would want would be for all of his family and friends to suffer on his behalf. He was a man of faith and while a lover of life, he was more a lover of Christ and the life to come. May we all console one another with the promises of Christ in the resurrection as well as with the knowledge that Msgr. Marcaccio has heard the words that he lived his life to hear: 'Well done, my good and faithful servant. Come, share your master’s joy.’ (Mt. 25:23)

Funeral arrangements will be made known in the days ahead. For now, reach out to someone if you feel the need to get some support for your grief, and know that you are not alone. All of us, the parish and school community of St. Pius X, Msgr. Marcaccio's family and friends, and we his brothers in ministry are united in prayer, sorrow, and thanksgiving for the life of this man and for the faith that his memory continues to inspire.

Know that I bring this deep hurt, as well as all of our joys and sorrows to our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament in these days as our country is united in prayer and worship at Eucharistic Congress in Indianapolis.

Peace,

+Michael T. Martin, OFM Conv.

Bishop of Charlotte
