Happy New Year!

The Satcher Health Leadership Institute is continuing the fight against HIV and AIDS for Black/African Americans. Our team understands the immediate need for more HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention efforts in our communities. By partnering with Gilead Sciences, SHLI will continue developing educational opportunities, collaborative partnerships, resources, advocacy, and active community engagement to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to THRIVE.

The Health Equity Tracker

The Health Equity Tracker aims to address health disparities nationwide by identifying at-risk populations and highlighting data inequities.

By providing policymakers, community leaders, and researchers with the data they need to make informed decisions, this platform supports efforts to achieve health equity and justice for all.

Meet Will Ramirez!

Director of Public Policy & Advocacy, Southern Aids Coalition (SAC)

Will is a housing and health policy professional, consultant, and community organizer who values selfless service and the inclusion of the community in decision-making processes. Years ago, Will served in the Navy and as an educator. Now, he’s the Director of Public Policy & Advocacy for the Southern AIDS Coalition (SAC). In this role, Will ensures that policy priorities such as Medicaid expansion, the national PrEP program, decriminalization of HIV, and HIV funding at the federal, state, local, and private levels remain top of mind for advocates and lawmakers. Currently, SAC oversees 16 states in the southern United States and DC. Will also serves on Mayor Andre Dickens' HOPWA Advisory Committee.

There is a distinction between being an advocate and an activist, especially in the realm of HIV advocacy,” said Will. “An advocate listens to and articulately voices the concerns of communities, while an activist proactively takes action and builds influence to enact transformations. Let’s aspire to be exceptional advocates as we progress on our path towards becoming impactful activists.”

Will holds a Master’s degree in public administration (MPA) from the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State University and a Bachelor’s degree in legal studies from the American Military University.

BLOG: Black Women, HIV/AIDS, and Mental Health

Despite decades of research, interventions, and prevention approaches, women of color – who have consistently been excluded from meaningful discussions – still face the stigma of being perceived as hyper-sexual and immoral (Stabb, 2023). Moreover, Black women face higher rates of HIV transmission, which may be linked to social determinants of health such as limited access to health care and economic disparities (Rutledge, 2023).
