About Us
We  educate, advocate and participate
because of your faithful support!

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." Margaret Mead

Just a few short years ago a group of friends got together with a vision for wolves to form an organization to educate and advocate for the long term recovery and the preservation of wolves.  The premise being to utilize  the best available science, using peer-reviewed data and following the principles of democracy. Thus, the National Wolfwatcher Coalition was born.  Over the past three years, we have sought middle ground and encouraged solutions, providing testimony on delisting and hunting/trapping regulations across the country.

Sadly, some of our founding board members have moved on to other adventures but continue their commitment to fight for wolves and other wildlife.   Our tracks will cross again but now, we would like to take this opportunity to thank Dave Hornoff, Diane Bentivegna, Chris Cross, Maggie Howell and Cheri Grayson for their contribution of time, energy and friendship.

In just three years, our website has been visited over one million, three hundred thirty-two thousand times and we have now exceeded 40,000 followers on Facebook and Twitter. We are proud of the distinction of being the only nationwide organization that speaks solely for the wolf.

We are an all volunteer organization and we are actively recruiting for new Board Members to serve a three year term. We are also looking for Advisors who can be the eyes and ears for the wolf in your particular Region or in your area of expertise, donating time as your schedule permits.

It doesn't matter where you live or your age; there is a job to do. Perhaps you can write a letter to the editor, report to the board on a meeting you attended, or vie for a seat on a wolf advisory board or read testimony at a hearing. Maybe you have IT skills or ideas for merchandise, whatever talents you possess, they can be put to use advocating for wolves.

Join one of our existing packs or become an alpha and help create a new pack! Daniel Sayre is located in Arizona and oversees issues concerning the Mexican Gray Wolf; Kat Brekken and Brandi Nichols are in the Yellowstone Region; Nancy Warren is in the Great Lakes Region and Janet Hoben coordinates social media.

With today's anti-wolf political climate, we all sometimes feel discouraged by the hatred.   David Mech said it best, "These people cannot be changed. If the wolf is to survive, the wolf haters must be outnumbered. They must be outshouted, outfinanced and outvoted. Their narrow and biased attitude must be outweighed by an attitude based on an understanding of natural processes. Finally their hate must be outdone by a love for the whole of nature, for the unspoiled wilderness, and for the wolf as a beautiful, interesting, and integral part of both."

We hope you will join us in our fight. If you would like to get involved please contact us via our website at http://wolfwatcher.org/connect/volunteer/

Project: Yellowstone supports wolf awareness
in honor of Yellowstone wolf 832F

Wolfwatcher's "06" sweatshirt.

Wolfwatcher considers its educational mission to be among its most important priorities.

Since Yellowstone wolf 832F ("O6") was killed during Wyoming's inaugural wolf hunt last season, we continue to receive an overwhelming number of emails and messages from supporters who recount their experiences in the park as they observed her travails as the alpha of the Lamar Canyon Pack.  We concluded that "06" was, perhaps, one of the best educators for her species...

Since her passing, we remain committed to continuing 832F's educational legacy via our "Project: Yellowstone" campaign.

Our mission

We 'educate, advocate, and participate' for the long term recovery and preservation of wolves based on the best available science and the principles of democracy.  We:

  1. educate the public about the important role that wolves play in maintaining healthy ecosystems
  2. inform the public about challenges to wolf recovery
  3. support measures that promote peaceful coexistence with wolves on the landscape
  4. educate the public about the issues in all regions and ways it can effectively participate in the democratic process to promote science-based decision-making about wolves.

All donations, no matter the amount, will be appreciated because they will enable us to:

  • provide educational programs, materials and events
  • participate in conferences, seminars, and consultation with other professionals in the fields of wolf biology, research, conservation, eco-tourism and environmental law.
  • secure a Wolfwatcher Legal Fund to sustain potential engagement in litigation that challenges local, state and/or federal policies that affect wolf preservation.
