Letter from the President of Right to Life of Michigan

As you know, Right to Life of Michigan launched a new educational campaign “Life. The Other Choice.” The tip of the spear of this effort is a collection of new cutting-edge multi-media ads under the same name.

We began airing two of these ads – “Test” and “Presence” - in early May. (The ads can be viewed here. The photograph above this letter is a still shot from “Test.”) These compelling ads are designed to reach women who may be considering an abortion with a message that invites them to make a hopeful, courageous choice for life. “Test” ends with an invitation to call or text a help line (1-800-712-HELP) that offers confidential counseling and connects a woman to one of the 100 Pregnancy Resource Centers in our state closest to where she is at that moment. This campaign is the most extensive campaign we have ever sponsored in the digital space, while including a presence on broadcast television.

I have some wonderful news to report to you, but I also have some bad news…

The good news! In the first few weeks of the airing of these ads, the help line saw a 14% increase in calls coming in from Michigan. This means that 32 women unsure of where to turn or how to find help reached out in just a few weeks. We are reaching women where they are and changing lives for the better. Lives saved. That’s our mission, and that’s the result.

The bad news… Because of limited funds, we had to cut this campaign a week shorter than anticipated. Women who we would have reached, will not be reached. That’s a difficult reality to face. The only way to get these ads back up and help women make a choice for life is to raise the money to do so.

Now we are preparing for a Phase 2 campaign in the fall. We must secure the funds now to determine our ad buy.

I know money is tight. I see it at the grocery store just like you do. Today, I’m making a $100 contribution to get these ads back up. And I’m asking you to do the same or double or triple that. I know some of you can afford to add even three zeros to that figure, and I know for most of you it is a sacrifice. I deeply appreciate whatever you can afford. We need at least 1.5 million dollars for the fall effort. Please, pray about it.

Celebrating Fathers: Our First Heroes

By Chris Gast, Right to Life of Michigan Guest Writer

Thank you, dads!

Dadding isn’t always easy, but it is rewarding. Sometimes, we pour so much energy into our families and the many other essentials in our lives that we don’t have time every day to reflect on our impact.

So, I asked my two-year-old son for some help: maybe some youthful energy can inspire me? I asked him to reflect on the role of fatherhood and what it means to him. He replied, “Hi! Daddy do some work.”

That actually does sum it up. The challenge of fatherhood is both accomplishing necessary tasks to help keep the family’s engine running, while also being present for your family. Sometimes that balancing act is easier, though often it’s not. While the current trend of working from home is helping, for most of history, there was little to balance. Before we entered the modern world—or even the Industrial Revolution—dads were at home, working in whatever their family’s profession happened to be. Dads worked alongside sons and daughters, not to mention their wives.

With all the modern comforts we enjoy today, we don’t think much about the tradeoff: parents are often called outside of the home to make ends meet. Kids these days seem even busier with school, their own activities, sports, and friends. We dads sometimes have to steal moments to spend meaningful time with our kids, or be intentional to ensure that happens, whether it’s fun hobbies, a family dinner or a heartfelt conversation.

The challenge grows even harder when kids grow older. They enter that awkward middle school phase, where a simple conversation about how their school day went often turns into an interrogation with the child retreating to another room or into another activity.

But, as dads must, we strive to rise up and meet the challenge.

I could quote you volumes of statistics showing you how important fathers are in the lives of their children, for everything from physical health, to their emotional state. Your importance begins in the womb and lasts throughout life. But, as dads who make the effort to be present, you probably already know that.

Most of us may not be heroes of great acclaim in public, but you are the first hero your kids will ever have. This Father’s Day, for all your heroic efforts to be present in the lives of your children, you deserve recognition and sincere thanks.

Thank you to the fathers who have dedicated their lives to their children. Thank you for getting up every day and making the courageous, hopeful choice for life.

That means some areas of the state will begin in-person voting on the 7th with the full state doing so by the 27th. Information on absentee and early in-person voting can be found at your local Clerk’s Office or with the Michigan Secretary of State. For more information, visit michigan.gov/sos/elections/voting.

In last week's LifeBeat episode, we reviewed the resources available for the 2024 Primary Election, including the RLM-PAC endorsements that were announced last week. We also discussed how parental rights are under attack in our communities, most recently in Caledonia, Michigan where the school board reportedly is considering allowing teachers and staff to aid students in obtaining or referring them for abortions.
