Down Syndrome

๏ปฟAwareness Month

helps raise public awareness and promote acceptance and inclusion of all individuals with Down Syndrome.

Did You Know...

๐Ÿ’™Down syndrome is named for Dr. John Langdon Down, who wrote the most prominent paper describing the disorder in the 1860s.

๐Ÿ’›The most common type of Down syndrome is trisomy 21, which means an extra copy of the 21st chromosome. It is not hereditary. (The other two types are translocation and mosaicism, which account for around 5% of cases.)

๐Ÿ’›Down syndrome is far and away the most common condition involving chromosomes, occurring approximately in one out of every 700 births.

๐Ÿ’™Down syndrome occurs regularly in both sexes and across all socioeconomic classes.

๐Ÿ’›With the great strides made in understanding this disorder, individuals with Down syndrome are living long, happy lives!

NADS is the oldest organization in the country serving individuals with Down syndrome and their families. It was founded in Chicago in 1961 by parents who chose to go against medical advice and raised their children with Down syndrome at home. Their pioneering efforts have made it easier for later generations of individuals with Down syndrome to be accepted by their families and communities, to develop their capabilities, and to work towards independence.  Please help us continue this great work to support all individuals with Down syndrome in achieving their full potential.
