Shamrock Stroll & Festival

Join us in celebrating the success of Senior Community Connections' first Annual Shamrock Stroll & Festival! The event was a delightful blend of family-friendly fun and fundraising for a great cause. With picture-perfect weather, engaging games, mouthwatering food trucks, creative face painting, mesmerizing balloon art, savory treats, and hands-on crafts, it was a day to remember.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the local businesses that participated and the sponsors whose support made this event possible. Your contributions are truly appreciated and have helped us in our mission to combat loneliness and isolation among local seniors by providing practical services and social opportunities.

Thank you to Senior Community Connections board members and staff for making SCC's festival so magical:

Friendship Blossoms Between Volunteer and Member

VyVy volunteered to give Becca a ride. During the commute, the two talked and realized they had a lot in common. They knew they would get along well. Vyvy describes Becca as lovely to be around with positive energy- always happy with everything.

After that initial transportation request, Vyvy and Becca became fast friends. They have shared lunches, gone out for ice cream, went to the playground with Vyvy’s little one, and went to Birkdale one day to enjoy the outdoors after lunch.

They have ventured to Charlotte for food and coffee together, where Becca read a book while Vyvy worked. Becca has met Vyvy’s mom and spent time with Vyvy’s daughter, mentoring her with reading.

Vyvy says about Becca, “She is such an amazing person to be around, she only sees the good in everything and she is always content with the most simple things. We get along great, we talk a lot about life and help each other on issues we have, it is nice to talk things through…”

In fact, Vyvy says the best part of her volunteering for SCC is meeting Becca. Vyvy has recommended volunteering for Senior Community Connections to her friends, telling them it is actually good for the soul to share time with the elderly and to give back.

Vyvy dreams of one day creating a nursing home in Columbia, a big house with a garden in the middle and a balcony all around the house with rocking chairs all around the hallways.

“Having the opportunity to participate makes me feel value for sure.”

If you or someone you know is interested in volunteering opportunities, please visit our website HERE or send us an email to seniorslkn@gmail.com with your interest and availability. We look forward to hearing from you!

Our Care Committee News: We continue to call our SCC members in our neighborhoods so we are hopeful their conversations and or cards have brought some sunshine to your day. If you did not have anyone call or write to you, please let us know and we will catch up with you soon.

Some suggestions for you and your family to think about when helping you "Age in Place" from the National Institute on Aging:

  • Speak to the person as a fellow adult.
  • Avoid hurrying older patients.
  • Speak plainly.
  • Address the person face-to-face.
  • Write down or print out things that need to be remembered for them.
