WEEKLY NEWSLETTER

CHILI SUNDAY

This Sunday we invite you to join us for our Annual Meeting and Chili Cook Off. The lunch will begin shortly after the conclusion of our 11AM worship service in our Fellowship Hall. Following worship, we invite those planning to attend the lunch and meeting to find seating and await instructions. We will provide guidance on going through our food lines, Rev. Kelly will offer a blessing and we will release you by table to the food lines.

If you are bringing a side dish or dessert, there are tables marked for those items. You are welcome to use the refrigerator in the kitchen to store your item until after worship. If you would like to sign up to bring a side dish or dessert, there is still time! You can sign up HERE

For those of you participating in our chili cook off, please bring your chili to church already at temperature. We simply don't have the power to heat 20 crockpots on high. Each participant has a designated spot for their chili. Please plug your chili in using the cords provided at your spot. PLEASE DO NOT TURN YOUR CROCKPOT TO ANY SETTING HIGHER THAN LOW.

We appreciate your support of this event. May the best chili's win!

On Sunday, we will provide information for voting and at the conclusion of Sunday's Annual Meeting, we will present the winners with the Golden Chili Bowl awards.

Have an awesome weekend!

All the best,

SUMMER CAMP 2024

We invite YOU to join us this summer at Templed Hills Heartland Conference U.C.C. Summer Camp 2024. Register for one of our several camp opportunities and discover this incredible experience at our camp, Templed Hills. We will pay 1/2 the cost of camp for any church members who attend camp. This summer they will be offering a variety of camps for ALL ages. You are really never too young and definitely never too old to go to camp. If you don't know...you need to know...camp is a must. It's an experience unlike any other. It's a week that will challenge you, stretch you, inspire you, motivate you and if you are like me and the thousands of others who have become camp lifers....it will change you forever...for the better. What makes camp so special? That's a really hard question to answer. It's hard because its so many things and so different to each person you ask.

Don't sit this out. Don't pass this up. Don't gloss this over as something not for your kid. You would be doing your child a complete disservice to not give camp a chance. Trust me. Below you will find all kinds of information regarding camp. On behalf of your children...thank you for considering this incredibly special ministry.

SUMMER CAMP INCENTIVE FUND: Summer Camp has been a large part of the DNA of our church for a very long time. It is an invaluable experience that we hope all of you will consider taking advantage of. In order to take advantage of this fund, you MUST complete the ALUCC Summer Camp Incentive Fund Form.  This DOES NOT officially register you for camp. This is only an internal form we use at our church to track who is going to camp from our church. We encourage those who need this fund in order to provide their children with a summer camp experience, to use this fund. We also encourage those who don't need it, to save it for others who do.

RESOURCES FOR PARENTS

CULTURE TRANSLATOR

Guns Blazing

What it is: PC and Xbox game “Palworld” has rapidly found a huge following, peaking last week with 2+ million players online at once. Now they’re under investigation by Nintendo’s Pokémon Company for intellectual property infringement.

Why gamers are loving it: While it certainly leans heavily into classic “Pokémon” elements, “Palworld” also combines elements of “Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom,” “Fortnite,” and “Minecraft” into the gameplay experience. The result is an open-world, survival-style game that involves, yes, collecting lots of monsters the game calls “pals,” but also mining for resources, and shooting down enemies. Another notable difference: “Pals” can be butchered for meat and exploited for their labor. (Not exactly the Ash/Pikachu dynamic.) Nintendo will investigate to see if there’s evidence to suggest the game’s developer based their pals directly on Pokémon models, but unless Nintendo actually brings a lawsuit, Palworld will continue unhindered. The internet-allegations have done little so far to slow the popularity of the game, which has sold 8 million copies in just six days.

Daylist Discourse

What it is: A new Spotify feature called “Daylist” curates playlists for users that are customized to the listening habits of their daily rhythms.

Why it's a meme: Spotify has shown yet again that they can turn their cold and technical algorithm into a product that feels warm and personable. “Daylists” are based on users’ listening histories, and they release in users’ feeds multiple times a day. Each time a new Daylist drops, it is tailored to the highly specific experience that Spotify predicts the user will be having when they see it. The result is playlists that often nail what the listener is looking for when they open the app. More than the songs themselves, each Daylist has an auto-generated title that reads as an uncanny description of the way we live out our days. (One Axis writer has “stripped down acoustic worship Tuesday nights” while another has “microcore meme Tuesday evenings.”) Music is transcendent to begin with, but seeing our listening habits described so succinctly makes users feel known and seen in a way they want to share—sometimes sincerely but, more often, for a laugh.

Mobbed Up

What it is: The latest “trend” to resurrect on TikTok is a style that’s being called the “mob wife.” One TikTok went so far as to declare, “Clean girl is out. Mob wife is in!”

What it looks like: Last year’s makeup trends, especially, were about pared back beauty, understated contouring, and letting impeccably-cared for skin take center stage. The “mob wife” aesthetic sees the pendulum swinging in the complete other direction, with a full face of foundation, heavy lids, and lined lips taking the stage. Fans of the trend are going thrift shopping for staples of the look like fur and faux fur coats, stiletto boots, and loud prints. Coincidentally (or not), the trend aligns with the 25th anniversary of “The Sopranos,” with that series experiencing a renaissance of sorts as young people discover it for the first time. Young people who are excited about the mob wife trend may be attracted to its in-your-face energy, unapologetic glamor, and how it alludes to a proximity to the powerful.

Is Roblox Safe? With just under half of its players being under the age of 12, and around a quarter of them being under nine, it’s safe to say that Roblox is a popular gaming platform for younger players. Part of the draw of Roblox is that it’s a “free” game that lets players create and play user-created games, offering a level of novelty that most games lack. It’s also not perfect, especially when it comes to protecting tweens. In our 7 Minute Video on Roblox, we explore how the game’s design can be (but isn’t always) detrimental to its young playerbase.

SYNC YOUR CALENDARS: Don't forget to sync your devices with our calendar HERE.

Hey Everyone! I have the privilege of serving as the Director of Youth Ministries at Avon Lake U.C.C. and would love nothing more than to get to know every teenager who reads this and what makes you....you and eventually introduce you to this really radical dude named Jesus. Before I do that though I should tell you a little about myself...I live in Lakewood with my wife Lisa and our three children - Max, Nora & Brooke. I am a big fan of Cleveland - especially the Metroparks, the Cavs, the Guardians, the Browns, Lake Erie, concerts at Blossom and Avon Lake sunsets. I enjoy coffee, antiquing, hiking, golfing, camping, photography, canoeing, stargazing & smoking ribs, pig butts, briskets and atomic buffalo turds in my spare time. I believe that Love wins. I think that everyone is awesome. I think that falling in love with yourself is the greatest gift you can ever receive. I think we should play more and worry less. This is your one stop location for everything you need to know about our youth ministries...each and every week. Thanks for stopping by.
