I was lucky enough to be asked to read a brand new manuscript by Rachel Linden, our beloved author from down south. She keeps getting better and better; I really think she is such a stronger writer now. She is constantly improving. I had many thoughts, and I left lots of notes for her. I still want her to continue to make her characters relatable and more likable. I also want her to work on more substance, for instance giving the reader more story to follow and leave us nice little trails and tidbits for us to feast upon. Doing developmental editing just takes me a little longer to read than a typical book. I also read Fourth Wing, by Rebecca Yarros. This is not a book that I would typically read. It is not my normal style and it is definitely more sexy than I typically read. I thought it was really, really fun. Hard to put down. It primarily follows a young woman who is going through training to be a dragon rider. This takes place at an extremely competitive school. Life or death stuff. There is magic and romance and dragons!!
I listened to Everyone but Myself, by Julie Chavez, and this is a memoir about her struggles as a human, a wife, and a mom. It is about putting everyone before yourself, and what that does to yourself and your body and your mind. I have to say, it was one of my favorite memoirs that I have read in a long time. She had some very unusual fears, and in my history I have suffered some of the same; I have never met anyone who has had the same afflictions. I also listened to
The Busy Body, by Kemper Donovan. This is a mainstream mystery. I did not love it at first, but it quickly grabbed my attention, and then the characters were very intriguing. This is a mystery in which a famous political person sort of finds themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time. It also follows the mind and thoughts of a main character who is the ghostwriter for famous people's memoirs, and I really enjoyed that angle.
This month I hope to read Kate's War, by Linda Henley—she is our guest author in April, and I have read all of her books so far. I also hope to read Things We Left Behind, by Lucy Score. It has been recommended to me by a few friends. I will try to maybe squeak in one more title. We shall see. I hope to listen to
The Manicurist's Daughter, by Susan Lieu, an author I met at the last PNBA event. I also want to listen to Piglet, by Lottie Hazell—seems to be a very interesting subject.
Happy Reading and Stay Safe!
