Class of 2024 Oath Ceremony
On May 22nd, the Class of 2024 took their Hippocratic Oath in front of family and friends to uphold the principles of beneficence, non-maleficence, justice and respect for the patient autonomy in their future medical practice.
The keynote address by Dr. Brian Goldman, ER physician at Mount Sinai Hospital and the voice of CBC radio series, White Coat, Black Art was uplifting as he championed for those taking the non-linear path of medical education. Teacher awards were distributed to preceptors and tutors who contributed outstanding teaching excellence. Valedictorian Matt Fuda highlighted the UGME stories of the past three years involving the pandemic, virtual learning and comradery with peers.
Congratulations to the Class of 2024 on achieving another milestone of their medical education success.

Tea and the SP
On May 7th the SP Program hosted an Appreciation Tea event on campus with many SP's in attendance. Collectible sports cards personalized with the faces of SP's decorated the tables, demonstrating their invaluable contribution to medical education and personable patient care.
Waterloo Regional Campus would like to say thank you to Marilyn Jacobi for her five years in her role as WRC's SP Program Assistant and looks forward to seeing her continue herself as an SP in the years ahead.
“Our Simulated Patients provide fundamental teaching in a longitudinal manner to build medical student clinical acumen. The valuable feedback provided by our SPs to the medical students during Clinical Skills is formative in helping to shape the physicians of tomorrow with skill, expertise, clinical competence, and compassion. A Multi-Disciplinary Sim in Trauma
Dr. Dave VanderBurgh, Academic Education Lead, Guelph General Hospital (GGH) and third year Resident, Hawmid Azizi demonstrate use of their new pregnant sim mannequin with abdominal trauma.
Usually, sims involve small learner only groups in a board room but in this case a multidisciplinary team of learners, physicians, nurses, EMAs, X-Ray, lab, RT's and OB/GYNE worked in collaboration in the trauma room.
AT GGH this particular simulation was part of their trauma program objective to improve trauma systems, specifically with specialty services such as obstetrics and the various departments needed to respond.
Previously, GGH did not have a sim mannequin that learners and staff could both intubate and do CPR on. Intubating heads and CPR mannequins were available, but no mannequin compatible with both of these training capabilities.
Dr. VanderBurgh would like to recognize the third year emergency medicine residents who ran the case and said they did an excellent job of coordinating a complex simulation scenario.

Incorporating EDI in Teaching and Administration
The Equity and Inclusion Office offers resources for faculty, administrators and staff on building an inclusive learning environment. MACgic School Bus tours campus:
The MACgic School Bus Community Service-Learning program was founded by Dr. Colin Yardley, Class of 2013. This program invites Grade 5 & 6 students from the Waterloo Region, to "climb aboard" the MACgic School Bus and learn about the world inside medical school at the Waterloo Regional Campus.
For half a day, students spend time with medical students, rotating through four different stations/activities, each teaching them about a different aspect of the human body and involving students in interactive activities.
On May 15th a group of learners led by Mendim Guse (C2026) taught thirty five grade five students from Bridgeport Public School an fun introduction to the GI, Neuro, Resp and Cardio systems.

The John C. Sibley Award for Excellence in Education is awarded to a part-time faculty member in the Faculty of Health Sciences who has contributed in an outstanding manner to the education of health professionals.
The award is named after former associate dean John (Jack) C. Sibley, one of the founders of FHS who established this award in 1986. Dr. Mohamed Alarakhia is recognized for his exceptional commitment to innovative teaching, interdisciplinary education and research in improving patient care.

Pandemic Perspectives and Literature
Read Dr. Shane Neilson's publication featured in Studies in Canadian Literature (SCL) to learn about both the impact and perceived impact of the pandemic on shared spaces.
An excerpt from his publication:
"The call for this special issue of Studies in Canadian Literature referred to the COVID-19 experience as one of “profound and unexpected disruptions to our shared spaces, routines, economies, societies, and work lives” (“The Ruptured Commons” 310), yet the ruptures in fact are regularly irregular, to echo a phrase that physicians use to describe rhythm in atrial flutter. Pandemics of various sorts punctuate world history, including Canadian history as a participant in global flows, including the tremendously disruptive SARS pandemic in 2004, the first of the twenty-first century, also the result of a coronavirus." pg. 87

Dr. Shane Neilson also is featured in a book entitled, "Planetary Health Humanities and Pandemics" where he examines the relationship of the pandemic with health humanities, specifically through the lens of instrumentalism.

In Memoriam of Dr. Neil Harte
Waterloo Regional Campus shares the sad news that Dr. Neil Harte passed away unexpectedly on May 16, 2024.
Dr. Harte worked in emergency medicine for 33 years with the last 16 years in St. Mary’s General Hospital in Kitchener-Waterloo. He taught numerous McMaster medical learners, many of whom are now practicing in the community.
Remembered for his love of family, sports and inquisitive nature, Dr. Harte recently experienced the total Solar Eclipse with his wife and daughters, sacrificing his sleep to drive many hours into Quebec for a clear sky.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. Mary's General Hospital Foundation's Cardiac Fund Donation.
