Volunteer Physician Member Needed-University of Waterloo

The University of Waterloo is seeking a physician member to serve on the Human Research Ethics Board. Prior experience on an REB is not required. Previous research or an interest in research is a definite asset. Training and orientation to the REB process and the physician member’s role will be provided by the staff in the research ethics office.

The Human Research Ethics Board meets monthly, from 10:00 a.m. – noon on the third Thursday of each month (except August). Parking expenses will be reimbursed. There is a financial honorarium associated with this role.

Active Teddy Bear Care:

The Teddy Bear Clinic made three visits this February, once to Kitchener Public Library and twice to The Girl Guides of Canada.

To appreciate the popularity of this clinic you would only have to look at the Kitchener Public Library to understand. As an, "open event" the library sees up to 70 children come through the clinic in a three hour time frame. There is no sign up in advance just an invitation and word of mouth of its success.

What makes The Teddy Bear Clinic a rewarding community service learning activity is educating children about healthcare through play. Medical learners can perform a surgery on a well loved stuffed bear and instantly see children witness the compassion of a physician.

Podcasts and Glam:

Through their work with GlamourGals, on Feb. 24th a group of medical learners visited Chartwell Terrace on the Square Retirement Residence to provide companionship and manicures to residents.

Dr. Brian Goldman from CBC's radio podcast, "White Coat Black Art" was present to interview both the GlamourGals and retirement home residents. He spoke with Harleen Chahal who started this chapter of GlamourGals about how effective the visits are in alleviating elder isolation.

In the podcast, conversations between residents and learners are heard where in spite of their age difference, commonalities are found in family, career aspirations and life stories. To hear the podcast click here

It's In You to Give:

Building, “Canada's biological lifeline” by planning a blood donor clinic is an invaluable investment in healthcare. Last month and with the help of other C2026 learners, Xinye Lu planned a two-day blood donor clinic hosted by Canadian Blood Services.

The behind the scenes planning of a blood donor event is a rewarding Community Service Learning activity for its impact in transfusion and transplantation care. Blood, plasma, stem cells and other components of blood are safely collected and used for those in need.

Xinye expressed gratitude to all donors for taking time out of their busy schedules to truly give back.
