Wallkill welcomes new director!
Dear Wallkill Public Library Community,
I wanted to take the time to introduce myself and let you all know how excited I am to have the opportunity to serve you as the new Wallkill Public Library Director. The welcome that I've received so far from those of you who I've already met already has been amazing, and I look forward to meeting more of you in the days to come. If you have the opportunity to come by and say hello, please do. I'd love to meet more of you. Seeing as my wife and I are new to the area, if you're so inclined, please pass along your recommendations for places to visit or dine out when you do.
More importantly, I want to assure you all that I take the role of library director very seriously. Wallkill Public Library has a great staff, and I'm lucky to have an opportunity to work with them to serve you. I'll do my best, along with all of the staff, to continue giving you all the great level of service you've come to expect from the library.
Sincerely, Dan Perkins

Duck Derby coming on May 11
Join the community for the third annual Duck Derby, a fun, family-friendly event on Saturday, May 11. The Duck Derby is hosted by Vision of Wallkill and Wallkill High School’s Senior Celebration Committee. Yellow rubber ducks will be launched into the Wallkill River, each contending to cross the finish line at Popp Park to claim the coveted “Fastest Duck” award and cash prize.
The Duck Derby will take place at Popp Park (3081 Route 208, Wallkill, NY 12589), starting at 12 noon. There are plenty of activities before the race: a bounce house, DJ and music, contests and games with ‘Ducky’ twists. The Wallkill Woman’s Club will be selling flowers just in time for Mother’s Day. Vendors will be offering BBQ and hot dogs for purchase, making it an easy and affordable lunch for the family. At 1 p.m., enjoy the Birds of Prey presentation sponosored by the Wallkill Public Library (see below for more info). If you haven’t adopted your duck before getting to Popp Park for the derby, you can do so between 12 and 2:30 p.m. Ticket sales end at 2:30 p.m. on derby day.
The Duck Derby main event kicks off at 3 p.m. Boaters will paddle up the Wallkill River to launch the rubber ducks and you can watch them float downstream towards Popp Park. Winners will be announced once all the rubber ducks have been retrieved from the river.
Want to adopt a duck? Contact members of Vision of Wallkill and Sr. Celebration Committee or stop in at the Wallkill Public Library for tickets. When you adopt a duck, you are supporting Wallkill High School’s Senior Class. Be sure to mark your calendar for a fun afternoon for the entire family. For more information about the Duck Derby, or for tickets, call/text: VOW at 845-325-2329 or Sr. Celebration at 845-728-0606.
Please note: this is a rain or shine event. The derby race may be cancelled if the river conditions are deemed dangerous for our boaters, kayakers, volunteers and spectators.

Saturday Morning Book Club's April pick
|
The Saturday Morning Book Club will have their next meeting at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, April 27. They'll be discussing The Keeper of Happy Endings by Barbara Davis. The group will be meeting in the library's children's room since the Book Sale will be happening in the reading room that day.
Soline Roussel is well schooled in the business of happy endings. For generations her family has kept an exclusive bridal salon in Paris, where magic is worked with needle and thread. It’s said that the bride who wears a Roussel gown is guaranteed a lifetime of joy. But devastating losses during World War II leave Soline’s world and heart in ruins and her faith in love shaken. She boxes up her memories, stowing them away, along with her broken dreams, determined to forget.
Decades later, while coping with her own tragic loss, aspiring gallery owner Rory Grant leases Soline’s old property and discovers a box containing letters and a vintage wedding dress, never worn. When Rory returns the mementos, an unlikely friendship develops, and eerie parallels in Rory’s and Soline’s lives begin to surface. It’s clear that they were destined to meet—and that Rory may hold the key to righting a forty-year wrong and opening the door to shared healing and, perhaps, a little magic. – Goodreads

Adult Fiction Book Club's May selection
On Thursday, May 9, at 6:30 p.m., the adult fiction book club will meet in our reading room to discuss The Measure by Nikki Erhlick. The Saturday Book Club loved this title, so the Adult Fiction Club jumped on board.
Eight ordinary people. One extraordinary choice.
It seems like any other day. You wake up, pour a cup of coffee, and head out. But today, when you open your front door, waiting for you is a small wooden box. This box holds your fate inside: the answer to the exact number of years you will live.
From suburban doorsteps to desert tents, every person on every continent receives the same box. In an instant, the world is thrust into a collective frenzy. Where did these boxes come from? What do they mean? Is there truth to what they promise?
As society comes together and pulls apart, everyone faces the same shocking choice: Do they wish to know how long they’ll live? And, if so, what will they do with that knowledge?
The Measure charts the dawn of this new world through an unforgettable cast of characters whose decisions and fates interweave with one another: best friends whose dreams are forever entwined, pen pals finding refuge in the unknown, a couple who thought they didn’t have to rush, a doctor who cannot save himself, and a politician whose box becomes the powder keg that ultimately changes everything - Goodreads
