Clear the Shelters event now underway!

The Wake County Animal Center is in a challenging situation due to the high number of animals in their care. To create space for new arrivals, the center is focusing on finding loving homes for the animals currently available.

To help, the center is participating in the Clear the Shelters event, waiving all adoption fees from Aug. 9 to Sept. 8. This initiative aims to find homes for the dogs and cats in their care, including those who have been waiting for over 90 days.

Currently, there are 78 animals available for adoption.

“The Wake County Animal Center, which is the only truly community-based organization, needs YOUR support to help the animals that have come in from our Wake County community,” said Dr. Jennifer Federico, director of the Animal Center. “Dogs are the most critical right now, and we need to have adopters who are interested in adopting local consider our animals. We are pleading with our community to Adopt Local – Adopt from Us!”

All adopted pets from the Wake County Animal Center are spayed/neutered, microchipped, and up-to-date on their vaccines. For those interested in adopting heartworm-positive dogs, Friends of Wake County Animal Center is offering $350 vouchers through the Heal a Heart Program to assist with medication costs. Be sure to ask for more information at the center!

Ready to adopt? Check out our adoption gallery or come by and see the sweet faces for yourself! The shelter is open for adoptions daily from noon to 6 p.m., seven days a week. The Wake County Animal Center is located at 820 Beacon Lake Drive, near the intersection of I-440 and New Bern Ave. in Raleigh.

August Holidays

  • August is National Immunization Awareness Month, and just like with us, it's vital to keep your pets up to date on their vaccinations. Vaccinating your pets is the best way to protect them from many serious illnesses. We strongly recommend yearly vaccinations to keep your pets safe. Puppies and kittens should receive their first vaccinations at eight weeks old, with boosters every four weeks until they’re about 20 weeks old. It's crucial to complete the entire vaccination series. Skipping boosters can leave your pet vulnerable to infection. Keep them protected!

  • National Check the Chip Day, celebrated on August 15, serves as an important reminder for pet owners to microchip their pets and ensure that their microchip information is current. Microchips are important for pet safety, providing a reliable way for lost pets to be identified and returned to their owners. Pets with microchips have a far greater chance of finding their way back home than those without. The process of microchipping is simple and painless, offering a permanent means of identification.

  • Aug. 26 is National Dog Day! While we honor all dogs, let’s not forget the many pups still waiting for their forever homes. Adopting a dog not only changes their life but also enriches yours in countless ways. Every adoption is a chance to give a dog the love and care they deserve, and in return, you gain a loyal companion who will be by your side through thick and thin.
