Head of School Search Update

Dear Washington Waldorf Community Members,

As we continue our search for the next Head of School, we wanted to provide you with an update on our progress and the current status of the search process.

Search Committee Progress:

The search committee has been working diligently to identify and evaluate potential candidates who possess the skills, experience, and values necessary to lead our school into the future. We have received a strong pool of applicants, and the committee is actively engaged in the interview and assessment phase of the selection process.

Candidate Interviews and Assessment:

Over the past few weeks, the search committee has conducted preliminary interviews with promising candidates. These interviews have allowed us to gain valuable insights into each candidate's leadership style, vision for our school, and alignment with our mission and values.

At this time, we are pleased to share that we have identified two candidates to move forward in the interview process. While we are interviewing candidates, the posting for the position will remain active through the end of January.

Next Steps:

This week, one of the candidates visited our school for two days. He had the opportunity to meet members of the teaching faculty, the administrative staff, members of the Parent Leadership Group and to sit in on classes. While visiting, he was also interviewed by the College and the Trustees Council.

A second candidate will visit WWS in early January and will have similar opportunities to meet with faculty and the PLG, and to sit in on classes prior to the College and TC interviews.

Following their interviews with each governing body, the candidates will participate in a separate interview conducted by Alma Partners, the DEIB (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging) consulting firm which recently completed our school’s DEIB audit. Alma Partners will develop the questions asked of each candidate and will share their feedback with the search committee and the TC.

We are committed to selecting a Head of School who not only has the necessary qualifications but also shares our commitment to providing an exceptional educational experience for our students.

Timeline:

While we are eager to complete the search process, we are also committed to thorough and thoughtful decision-making. We anticipate announcing the appointment of the new Head of School in the spring. We appreciate your patience and support as we work to ensure a successful outcome.

Thank you for your continued commitment to WWS. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to the members of the search committee.

Sincerely,

Wendy Jackson, College Chair

Maria Monteverde-Jackson, Trustees Council Vice-Chair

Marilyn Noguera, Trustees Council

Gabriele Schilz, College

Grade 11 - Humanities

In November, guest teacher, David Barham, M.Ed. taught Grade 11 in a deep dive study of the medieval epic Parzival. Mr. Barham returned to us after teaching a main lesson on the Transcendentalists last year. He is the Director of the Waldorf High School Teacher Education Program at CfA and has worked in four North American Waldorf schools, including one in Mexico. A graduate with a master’s degree in Waldorf education from Antioch University New England, David recently completed a certificate program in Waldorf Leadership Development. His undergraduate degree at Tufts University was in English and Religion.

Along with an in depth study of the text and delving into the themes and relevancy of the story, each student spent time reflecting on the academic work with an artistic exploration of some aspect of the story. These photos show some of the creative ways that the students engaged with the arts integrated aspect of their study of Parzival.

A Christmas Carol

By Barbara Field

Based on the Novel by Charles Dickens

Community Performance Wednesday, Dec 20 at 7pm

Note from the Director:

I’m excited to be directing a production of this classic tale. “A Christmas Carol” meets the 8th grade class in many ways. Firstly in that it is a ghost story at heart; a delightful, frightful haunting - and an awakening. It requires a large cast of players, and It dovetails beautifully with the 8th grade curriculum of the industrial revolution and it’s costs and benefits for humanity around the globe. Despite the play’s trappings of 19th century Judeo-Christian England, it’s message is a universal one. At bottom I believe it is a morality play about human greed, and our overwhelming need to connect and care for one another as a basic human necessity—themes that remain as relevant in our society as ever.

Message of Thanks from Trina D. Parker, Sister of Stacey Kornegay

As the one year anniversary of Stacey's untimely passing approaches, the holidays and life in general will never be quite the same. But we truly appreciate how the Washington Waldorf School community has embraced us as its own family. We continue to receive calls and text messages from some of you wishing to share a fond memory, a vivid dream, a passing thought of Stacey or simply to check on our well-being. Your genuine good tidings remind us of how you cherished her so.

And now WWS has a gorgeous new gymnasium with beautiful bleachers erected in Stacey's memory. We are extending a huge THANK YOU to Maria Monteverde-Jackson and Jon Jackson for this wonderful gift.

May Stacey's spirit continue to touch your hearts just as it touches ours. We would also like to wish each of you a safe and joyous holiday season.

Go Red-Tailed Hawks!

Sending love and blessings,

The family of Stacey Kornegay (Ricardo Kornegay, Phyllis L. Kornegay and Trina D. Parker)
