Update on business advocacy for our members.

We are working for you!
Business Member Advocacy Updates:

The Willoughby Western Lake County Chamber of Commerce recently sent a letter to our elected officials to tell them to reject job-killing tax hikes that would undermine our nation’s economic recovery.  This legislation which is now being considered by Congress will reverse the positive impact that the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 had on the American economy before the pandemic. This would be the largest tax increase in history to fund an agenda to massively expand the role and reach of government paid for by American job creators.

The Willoughby Western Lake County Chamber of Commerce recently supported SB142, asking licensing requirements for the building trades. Improperly installed or maintained plumbing, HVAC and electrical systems increase chances of mold growth, flooding, house fires, carbon monoxide poisoning explosions and other potential catastrophes.  According to the Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board (OCILB), 8 out of 10 consumer complaints received each week are from businesses and home owners who have issues with unlicensed residential contractors.

BWC Update - COVID-19 Claims
In May, the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) proposed a change to the Ohio Administrative Code to exclude COVID-19 claims from an employer’s workers’ compensation experience/rates for those employers that pay premiums to BWC. On Friday, June 25, 2021 the BWC Board of Directors approved the change.
BWC may cover a COVID-19 claim if certain criteria are met including contracting COVID-19 during the employee’s course of employment. With the approved rule change, all claim costs associated with allowed COVID-19 workers’ compensation claims occurring between March 9, 2020 and July 2, 2021 will be excluded from your experience and will not impact your premiums. This change will also include costs being excluded from both individual and group retrospective rating programs.
We at Sedgwick will continue to keep you informed about this important change.
