Tree Plantings, Tutorial and Watershed Story

Greetings Watershed Friends,

As we move into June, I want to reflect on all of your great work in May! Sixty-seven Watershed Stewards participated in independent projects and 16 events reporting over 300 hours! Bravo! Thank you for your efforts removing garlic mustard, maintaining green infrastructure, monitoring our watersheds and planting trees. We are looking forward to another great month with you and thank you for the positive impact you have on our local watersheds!

I am very excited to share the new animated Tree Planting Tutorial created by our very own Natural Resources Specialist Taelor Benoit. They did an excellent job of detailing our 7-step planting process in an enjoyable two minute video.

Let's talk more trees please! We are continuing our efforts this month to help reforest Garfield Park Reservation. Natural Area Manager Erik Shaffer spent a few days near the end of May improving the soil at Trolley Turn. This involved the addition of topsoil and the use of a spader to loosen up and prepare the soil for planting. What was once a parking lot can now transition to a future forest. Join Natural Area Manager Valerie Carter-Stone June 1st (today!), June 7th and June 8th to help with this transition.

Restoration Update. We have several restoration projects occurring this year including the Garfield Pond and Stream Restoration at Garfield Park Reservation and stream restoration projects at Foster's Run in North Chagrin Reservation and Johnson's Creek in Hinckley Reservation. All of these may include opportunities for volunteers to get involved with planting efforts. We anticipate some possible plantings in late June and early July, but advance notice may be short as we deal with permits, weather, and changing timelines. If you would like to be "on call" to help with these projects shoot us a note at wvpinfo@clevelandmetroparks.com so we can include you on a notification list to join our stream restoration fun.

Please continue to reach out to wvpinfo@clevelandmetroparks.com to provide feedback and support along with any questions. One of our team will get back to you as soon as we are able.

Fondly,

Elizabeth Hiser (she/her)

Stream Restoration Ecologist

Watershed Stories: Why We Plant Trees

Why We Plant Trees (June 2022)

Planting trees results in many wonderful environmental, personal, and community benefits. From an environmental perspective, trees are known for reducing stormwater runoff by taking in rainwater, improving air and water quality by absorbing pollutants, increasing biodiversity by providing habitats for native wildlife, and helping to fight climate change by reducing greenhouse gases by storing carbon dioxide in their wood.
