WVHIN

A Lifeline for Providers, Hospitals and Care Teams

Better care starts with better data.

The West Virginia Health Information Network is a digital bridge to comprehensive, near-real-time patient data — across a patient’s care settings — right at your fingertips.

Update from the Executive Director

WVHIN recently celebrated a decade of operation and as we reflect on our journey, we are proud of the progress we've made towards our mission of providing the healthcare community with a trusted, integrated and seamless electronic infrastructure.

Last year, providers launched the WVHIN Portal nearly half a million times and our network now supports over 1.7 million patients statewide. We have about 7,800 active users each week, serve 53 out of 55 of West Virginia's hospitals, 90% of the state's federally qualified health centers and nearly all ambulatory care providers. We remain focused on expanding our impact and continuing our work to ensure that clinicians and care teams have vital and insightful patient information, right when it's needed most.

We're excited to introduce new features that improve our data quality and better support care teams' workflows, such as medication parsing, an HIE Admin Tool and improved care coordination tools.

As we strive to improve clinical tools, quality patient care and more comprehensive population health initiatives, we value your feedback and ideas to continue to build a better network together. Please email us anytime at: info@WVHIN.org.

Using the WVHIN Portal to Reduce Your Patients' LOS

Last year, average hospital stays dropped 4.1% nationally—promising news, given that length of stay (LOS) surged 19% in 2022. But in West Virginia, LOS is substantially higher than the national average. The West Virginia Hospital Association reported an average LOS of 5.94 days for hospitals across the state, surpassing the nationwide average of 4.5 days.

It’s a call to action for better care coordination and management, something our WVHIN Portal is well-poised to support.

Certainly, a number of factors influence the amount of time our patients spend in the hospital, including operational issues that delay discharges. But one of the biggest barriers to reducing LOS—breakdowns in communication across care settings—can be mitigated when clinicians commit to using the WVHIN Portal to access the most up-to-date patient information available.
