Grizz Pest

"Embracing the Buzz in Illinois!

Hey, Cicada enthusiasts! It's almost time for a cicada symphony as they are back in full force in Illinois this year. With two broods emerging at the same time, these 13 AND 17 year cicadas will make this summer extra loud! Answered by the professionals at Grizz Pest, here are some common questions about these buzzing creatures!

Why do cicadas make so much noise?

  • Cicadas produce loud buzzing sounds as a mating call. Males create the noise by rapidly vibrating special structures called tymbals to attract females

Why do cicadas emerge in large numbers?

  • Cicadas are known for their periodic, synchronized emergences. This is often a survival strategy, as emerging in large numbers helps to overwhelm predators, ensuring the survival of the species.

Are cicadas harmful to plants or humans?

  • Adult cicadas do not harm humans or plants. They do not bite or sting, and while females lay their eggs in tree branches, the damage is minimal. In fact, cicadas can be beneficial for the environment as their bodies contribute nutrients to the soil when they die.

Does Grizz Pest provide services or treatments for cicadas?

  • There isn't a specific treatment for cicadas, as they are a natural part of the ecosystem, leaving a food source for birds and other wildlife. They don't pose a direct threat to humans or plants and because cicadas are not harmful, they do not require control measures.
