Profound Pauillac Pichon Baron 2020

Hey Artisans,

Last year was THE year for Bordeaux... Wine Spectator's #3 Wine of 2023 is none other than the Chateau Lynch-Bages 2020. You could say this is 'business as usual' ever since the 1985 vintage was the #1 Top 100 Wine of 1988!

  • This was the first vintage produced at Lynch Bages massive brand new winery. As you can see—it SHOWS!

  • Eight ratings, all between 99-95+ points, from the most prominent critics and publications

  • Comes in at a fraction of 1st-Growth pricing: $169.97!

  • Our stock is IN THE HOUSE! That's right, unlike all other merchants: you don't have to wait until May 2024 to get your pre-arrival bottles.

Onto their #8 Wine of 2023: the Profound-Pauillac, Chateau Pichon-Baron 2020! This mighty wine truly deserves all this acclaim:

  • Wine Spectator's highest-rated Bordeaux of the entire 2020 vintage @ 97 points

  • Eight ratings, all between 99-97 points, from prominent critics and publications

  • Super 2nd Growth* at a fraction of 1st-Growth pricing: $179.99 to $199.99

*Super 2nd is a term used to describe a 2nd Growth Bordeaux wine that is almost at the level of quality as the 1st Growths. The term was coined by the consumer marketplace to describe 2nd Growth Bordeaux wines that sell for a price that is often between the 1st Growths and the other 2nd Growths.

The 2020 vintage for Left Bank Bordeaux is outstanding and continues the trilogy from 2018 and 2019:

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate reports:

"Bordeaux’s 2020 vintage has produced brilliant wines that exemplify the region’s rapid agronomic and technical evolution..."

James Suckling reports: 2020 Brilliance

"...if you buy or drink a bottle of top-rated 2020 Bordeaux, you are going to be more than happy. In fact, you most likely will be elated."

Decanter reports: Bordeaux Wine Vintage 2020 Is A Silky Delight

"...the overall take on vintage 2020 is—in a word: stellar."

2020 Chateau Lynch-Bages Pauillac

99 Points - James Suckling:

"A beautifully layered red with blackcurrant, hazelnut and lead-pencil character and fine, velvety tannins. Full-bodied and reserved. It’s like a tightly knit ball of polished tannins that are cashmere in texture. So very long and impressive. Give this time. A terrific Lynch. Better after 2027." (12/22)

98 Points - Decanter:

"One of my favourite wines of the vintage, this is a wonderful example of high definition winemaking but still offering plenty of Pauillac swagger. Smells dark and slightly savoury, full of black fruit and toasted aromas. Bright and lively on the palate with clarity and precision to the berry fruit, shining and clear with juicy, mouthwatering acidity - so much energy in the glass. Chalky, graphite-laced tannins fill the mouth, giving structure and clear terroir markers with a lingering minerality on the finish. Perfectly weighted with incredible delectability and drinkability. Persistent with a long finish. Superb effort." - GH (Jan 2023)

96-98 Points - Wine Enthusiast:

"Barrel Sample. Bold black fruits and dense, textured tannins are very much in the style of the estate. What is new in this vintage is the extra precision that lifts the wine, bringing together the beautiful black currant flavors of ripe Cabernet Sauvignon with a refined texture of sophisticated tannins. This is an impressive wine, sure to age over many years" - Roger Voss

96 Points, #3 Top 100 of 2023 - Wine Spectator:

"Gorgeous from the start, with cassis and violet notes leading off, followed by additional waves of black cherry and blackberry fruit as well as sweet tobacco and iron. Shows subtle savory and cedar hints that stay in the background, as the iron note pierces through the fruit on the finish. Almost approachable for the fruit, but wait if you can. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2026 through 2040." - JM (Mar 2023)

96 Points - Vinous:

"The 2020 Lynch-Bages, the first vintage vinified at the new winery, has a beautifully-defined bouquet with a strong estuarine influence, brine and seaweed infusing the black fruit. It's almost understated at first, but it opens wonderfully in the glass - quintessentially Pauillac. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, quite concentrated that is counterbalanced by a fine bead of acidity. The saline note on the finish is superb, lingering in the mouth. What an absolutely delicious Lynch-Bages for the long-term." - Neal Martin (Feb 2023)

96 Points - Jeb Dunnuck:

"The 2020 Château Lynch-Bages brings even more density and depth and is another vin de garde in the vintage. A blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, aged in 75% new barrels, this inky hued beauty boasts a ripe, powerful, full-bodied style that carries serious concentration as well as building, ripe, velvety tannins. While it doesn't have the elegance of the 2019, it brings beautiful cassis and blackberry fruit, lots of spice, graphite, and lead pencil aromatics, terrific balance, and a blockbuster finish. It's going to need at least a decade and will have 40-50 years of prime drinking." (Mar 2023)

96 Points - The Wine Independent:

"Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2020 Lynch-Bages is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, and 4% Cabernet Franc, aged for around 18 months in French oak barriques, 75% of them new. Warm scents of cassis, blueberry preserves, and juicy blackberries jump from the glass, followed by suggestions of rose oil, cedar, anise, and menthol with a waft of graphite. The medium-bodied palate has a solid structure of grainy tannins and great tension to support the energetic black fruits, finishing light on its feet." - LPB (Jun 2023)

95+ Points - Robert Parker's WA:

"The vintage that inaugurated the estate's new state-of-the-art winery, the 2020 Lynch-Bages has turned out very nicely, offering up aromas of crème de cassis and blackberries mingled with notions of pencil shavings, spices and classy new oak. Medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with good concentration, ripe, powdery tannins and a seamless, integrated profile for such a young Lynch-Bages, it shows considerable promise. The blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot incorporates more Merlot than usual, reflecting relative yields in the vintage more than any stylistic shift." - William Kelley (Apr 2023)

We also have 10 bottles of 2000 Chateau Lynch-Bages Pauillac directly from the Chateau!

97 Points - Robert Parker's WA:

"Beginning to open magnificently, the still dense purple-colored 2000 reveals a blossoming bouquet of blackberries, cassis, graphite and pen ink. Full-bodied with velvety tannins that have resolved themselves beautifully over the last eleven years, this wine is still an adolescent, but it exhibits admirable purity, texture, mouthfeel and power combined with elegance. One of the all-time great examples of Lynch Bages, the 2000 is just beginning to drink well yet promises to last for another 20-25+ years. Drink 2011-2036." -RP (8/30/11)

2020 Chateau Pichon-Baron Pauillac

2nd Growth Grand Cru Classé

99 Points - James Suckling:

"Fabulous aromas of blackcurrant, blueberry, crushed stone, graphite and lead pencil. Some violets and other flowers, too. Full-bodied with incredibly encompassing tannins that are like the finest velvet in texture. The structure is superb, with so much tension and focus. Seamless. This could be the new 1990 or better. Try after 2028." (Dec 2022)

98+ Points - Jeb Dunnuck:

"The flagship 2020 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron is pure gold, a full-bodied, rich, powerful 2020 displaying the vintage's purity, focus, and structure front and center. A blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Merlot, its dense purple hue is followed by a mammoth-sized bouquet of cassis, blackberries, smoked earth, graphite, and cedar pencil. With ripe tannins, a seamless, layered mouthfeel, and one heck of a finish, it comes closest in my mind to the estate 2010, and I think is clearly in the same realm as the 1989, 1990, 2000, 2009, 2010, 2015, and 2019. It offers pleasure today, but it certainly warrants 7-8 years, a decade if possible, of bottle age and will have 40-50 years of overall longevity." (Mar 2023)

98 Points - Vinous:

"The 2020 Pichon Baron is every bit as magnificent as it was en primeur. A wine of vertical intensity and explosive power, the 2020 offers up an exotic mix of dark red/black fruit, espresso, licorice, menthol, gravel and dried herbs. This potent, driving Pauillac needs time to come together. .It marries the fruit intensity of a warm year with the driving energy of a cool year. The 2020 is a gorgeous Pichon Baron." - Antonio Galloni (Feb 2023)

98 Points - Wine Enthusiast:

"Made with a high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine offers dark tannins that give density and massive black fruits. With a magnificent combination of dark fruits and rich structure, it is set for long-term aging. Drink from 2028." - Roger Voss (Apr 2023)

98 Points - Decanter:

"Gentle and delicately aromatic but rich too, full of coffee, mocha, dark chocolate, caramel and medicinal herbs - mint and aniseed with a combination of red, blue and black berry fruits. Lovely density and weight on the palate, really very tannic but wide with an aerated effect so it doesn't feel at all heavy with a bright juiciness and extremely long length. The tannins make the first impression with a velvet texture and chalky minerality but it’s clean and the fruit has a crystalline purity that gives a sleek and direct overall impression. Generous, elegant and refined yet still not showing its best." - GH (Jan 2023)

97 Points, #8 Top 100 of 2023 - Wine Spectator:

"This has a very large-scaled yet properly proportioned core of cassis, plum and blackberry fruit flavors that are remarkably pure and focused. Buried deep within is a sleek, vibrant iron spine that drives the finish as the fruit keeps pace. Extra savory, tobacco and cedar nuances fill out all the remaining available space. A towering wine, with a buttoned-up feel. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best from 2030 through 2045." - JM (Mar 2023)

97 Points - Robert Parker's WA:

"The brilliant 2020 Pichon-Longueville Baron offers up inviting aromas of sweet berries and cassis mingled with pipe tobacco, loamy soil, pencil shavings and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, its velvety attack segues into a concentrated mid-palate that's framed by rich, powdery tannins, concluding with a long, vibrant finish. A blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Merlot, it's a true classic that's a touch less demonstrative out of the gates than the sensual 2019, but which in the fullness of time will prove every bit as good." - WK (Apr 2023)

97 Points - The Wine Independent:

"A blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Merlot, the 2020 Pichon Baron is deep garnet-purple in color. It gallops out of the glass with powerful notes of creme de cassis, blackberry pie, and licorice, followed by suggestions of rose petals, Indian spices, and cedar chest with a touch of mocha. The medium-bodied palate is elegant and fresh with fine-grained tannins supporting the bright black fruits, finishing long and perfumed." - LPB (Mar 2023)
