Plan Ahead for Spring Cleaning Disposal & Recycling!!

The Wood County Solid Waste Management District (SWMD) would like to remind residents that during the coming months as your spring cleaning takes place the Wood County Landfill is available for proper trash disposal.

The Landfill is open Monday through Friday 7:00 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. and Saturday

8:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. For additional information, please call the Landfill scale house at 419-352-0180 or visit our website at www.recyclewoodcounty.org/landfill/.

Several household recycling options are also available at local Wood County businesses. The District offers an on-line Household Recycling Guide.

April is Earth Month and multiple agencies are collaborating throughout Wood County to provide events geared toward conservation, education and family fun. The 9th Annual Community Earth Day Celebration will be the culminating event held on Sunday, April 22 ^nd, 2018 from 2-4 pm. This free family event is open to all and is filled with fun hands-on learning stations.

Try your hand at archery hosted by the Wood County Park District, take a nature walk with the Bowling Green Parks & Recreation Department, power a light bulb with the City of Bowling Green’s power generating bicycle, give the Solid Waste Management District’s giant Earth Ball a roll, and hold a crayfish at ODNR’s Scenic Rivers station. Interactive games will be provided by the Northwestern Water & Sewer District, BGSU, and others. The City of Perrysburg, the Wood County Master Gardeners, WLI, and the American Heart Association will host earth friendly activities, and the Wood County Library’s CNG bookmobile will be onsite providing earth friendly stories!

The Montessori School of BG, located at 515 Sand Ridge Road, provides an ideal backdrop for this Earth Day Celebration! Enjoy 14 acres of land, visit a Learning Lab, play on the playground and spend some time at the Black Swamp Preserve and Slippery Elm Trail.

Recycling Around Wood County Update

Implementation of 10 Permanent 24/7 Drop-off locations for mixed recycling around Wood County is currently underway. We appreciate the assistance of many villages and townships, as well as the Northwestern Water & Sewer District to provide sites for this project. As a reminder, the North Baltimore recycling location, Bowling Green Recycling Center, and NAT 24 Hour Drop Off locations will remain unchanged.

Our target date for full implementation is June 2018. We are in communication with the community groups that provide great assistance with recycling throughout Wood County. Prior to implementation, direct advertising will provide information about the materials that can be recycled and how to prepare them.

This is a terrific opportunity to increase recycling throughout Wood County, and it will take a community effort to ensure its success. We thank all of the jurisdictions that have agreed to host the containers on their properties and look forward to making the recycling program more accessible and convenient for our residents!

Our Environmental Educator, Amanda Gamby has taken a great opportunity to become the Sustainability Coordinator for the City of Bowling Green. S he has worked for the Solid Waste Management District for 12 years. She will be truly missed and we wish her much success in her new role. We are in the process of searching for a replacement with an anticipated start date in May. We will send contact information for the new Environmental Educator soon.

Q. What batteries are considered toxic?

A. Rechargeable and lead-acid batteries should be disposed of properly to prevent toxic heavy metals from leaching into the environment. Luckily, several businesses located in Wood County accept these batteries for recycling and proper disposal. Click here for a complete listing .

Q. Can I throw alkaline batteries in the trash?

A. Most battery manufacturers have eliminated the added mercury from alkaline batteries and with the high costs involved in recycling these types of batteries, most businesses will not take them for disposal. Experts suggest that alkaline batteries are safe to dispose of in your regular trash. However, a few Wood County businesses do take alkaline batteries for recycling.
