WITH LOVE AS OUR GUIDE

[This week’s opening comes from our incredible partner in activism Jessica Craven, author of the Chop Wood, Carry Water newsletter (subscribe HERE), who writes about what we can learn from the tragedies that shaped Biden:]

Here’s what I found: Biden was thirty when it happened. He’d just been elected as the junior Senator from Delaware. He’d been interviewing staffers for his new role when he got the call. His wife Neilia had been out buying a Christmas tree with their three young kids. They’d all been driving home, and were hit by a truck at an intersection. Neilia and their daughter, Naomi, who was just over one year old, perished instantly. The boys, Beau and Hunter, survived, but were badly injured.

President Biden considered stepping down after the accident, but decided to stay on and serve. He did so while simultaneously grieving and raising two young, also grieving boys. In order to give them security and consistency he took the train back to Delaware every night after work to read to them and put them to bed.

Eventually he remarried and had another daughter. The kids grew up. His son Hunter developed a drug and alcohol problem, but Biden never wavered in his love and support. Beau entered the armed services, served with distinction, and then died of glioblastoma at 45. President Biden was tempted to resign from office again then, but Beau’s dying plea was that he not do so.

It was because of this dying plea—and the Charlottesville march—that Joe Biden decided to run for President.

I repeat this story because it is so foundational to who President Biden is. It speaks of staggering loss. It speaks of love. It speaks of character. It speaks of family, dedication, commitment, and strength. It speaks of compassion. All are things that MUST be present in the person who leads this nation. They must. All are present, in spades, in Joe Biden.

None, not even love, is present in his opponent. Think about that. Trump couldn’t get a single family member to show up at his trial until the press drew attention to their absence. He is essentially alone in the world. He has no obvious love for anyone. He is beloved by none. It’s not clear he even knows what the feeling is.

This alone makes him unfit for office. Because love—of country, of family, of principles, of Americans—is necessary to do the job. Without it the presidency becomes no more than a huge lever of power, to be wielded selfishly, cruelly, and carelessly at will. That is how Trump treated it once; he will do so again.

We can’t have it. We must aspire to better. We must fight for love at all costs, not just in ourselves, but in our countrymen and in our leaders.

That’s why I’ll keep chopping wood and carrying water. Because the cause is worth it. And so are the people we’re fighting for.

I hope you’ll join me. Because together, with love as our guide, we’re unstoppable.

VIDEO SPOTLIGHT

HUBBELL HONORS ALL THE FIELD TEAM 6 HEROES (YOU!)

Robert Hubbell is one of our favorite partners. His “Today’s Edition” newsletter (sign up HERE) provides hope, optimism, and concrete calls to action to over 100,000 readers. At our 2024 Register Democrats Summit, Robert explained why every single activist and every single Field Team 6 volunteer is a true American hero, defending democracy for future generations. We're honored for the kind and inspiring words. Check out the video HERE and get amped to go in person, send more texts, write more postcards, and make more calls (or work behind the scenes to make all of those things possible) to register Democrats!

EVENTS

TODAY: OHIO TEXT ARCADE!

With 17 Electoral College votes, Ohio is an invaluable state. And though Trump won it in 2016 and 2020, the Buckeye State enshrined abortion rights in the state constitution in 2023. So it's a big ol' battleground state in 2024, and Democrat Sherrod Brown is a must-win for us to hold the Senate.

That means it's all hands on deck. Cue our Text Arcade for Ohio! (And we're throwing in some Michiganders too this time!) For just 25 smackeroos, you get to blast out 1,400 texts and help us register likely Democrats. Today at 3p PT/6p ET. Sign up HERE.

FRIDAY, MAY 31: TEXTBANK FOR THE BUCKEYE STATE!

If you can't make the Text Arcade today (or even if you can), help us pave the way to victory in Ohio at our MASSIVE textbank on Friday, May 31 at 11a PT/2p ET. Because our wonderful partners at Forward Blue generously donated to double our capacity, we'll be texting 100,000 unregistered, likely Democrats in Ohio! The best part – it's free for you! So sign up HERE.

SATURDAY, JUNE 8: VIVA NEVADA CASINO NIGHT WITH HOST LARRY WILMORE!

In 2022, Field Team 6's beloved partner Onward Toward Progress raised enough money to help us get Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto re-elected, cementing Democratic control of the Senate. And this year, keeping Nevada's other Senate seat and 3 House seats blue is the jackpot! But if we're gonna win the gold in the Silver State, we need to rustle up some dinero pronto, and get more Democrats registered to vote. That's why you are cordially invited to the Onward Toward Progress event "Viva Nevada! Let's Save Democracy again!" – a casino night fundraiser for Field Team 6!

It'll be hosted by legendary comic, Daily Show correspondent, Nightly Show host, and Executive Producer of Blackish Larry Wilmore (see his White House Correspondents' Dinner set HERE) at the incredible La Cañada Flintridge Country Club, and tickets include hors d'oeuvres, unlimited beer and wine, and $100 worth of casino chips! There's also a raffle, specialty cocktails, and for those who can't make it in person, an absolutely huge online auction (not live yet, but keep checking back HERE)!

All proceeds from this night of fun go to Field Team 6 registration work in Nevada, for the 2nd year in a row! In 2022, with funds OTP raised, FT6 registered 27,346 Democratic and independent voters – 8,564 of whom voted – supplying the entire victory margin of Democratic Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, who won by only 7,928 votes – and secured Democratic control of the Senate! So yes – your bets at this casino night can actively save a branch of Congress!

Join us Saturday, June 8 from 6-10p PT. Click HERE for more information and to buy tickets. We're already warming up your lucky dice!

SUNDAY, JUNE 9: A WINE-FUELED FUNDRAISING PARTY IN SONOMA

Want to defend LGBTQ+ rights – and democracy itself – this November?

Want to do it while drinking fine wine at a truly breathtaking ranch in Sonoma? Now you can! Please join Field Team 6 founder Jason Berlin at this wonderful in-person event, learn about our plans to save the world in November, and find out how YOU can help by donating and volunteering. Can't wait to see you there! [We're limited to 50 guests, so sign up now, before we hit capacity!] Click HERE to sign up!

NATIVE ART FOR NATIVE VOTES: NEW FUNDRAISING GOAL TO BUY KEY DATA

Native Americans are a crucial part of our game plan to win the trifecta in November with victories in the House, Senate and White House. So we set out to raise 15 grand to fund 10 Native American artists who'll put their amazing art on postcards, social media, and more to help register Native Americans to vote!

And we did it! We raised $15,000! We're so thankful to everyone who donated to the cause. But we're not done yet...

We've set a new goal: to raise $5,000 more so we can buy data for unregistered, likely Democratic Native Americans, starting with sovereign lands in our target states. So please chip in HERE!
