Dan and Samuel Habib win an Emmy for

My Disability Roadmap

Dan Habib and Samuel Habib of WIHD won a News & Documentary Emmy Award for their short film, My Disability Roadmap. Their New York Times Op-Docs film was honored at the September 27, 2023 ceremony held at the Palladium Times Square Theater in New York City. “My goal for this film is that people won't talk down to people with disabilities. “I want everyone to know that people with disabilities demand respect and rights,” Samuel said in his acceptance speech. Dan and Samuel dedicated the award to late disability rights pioneer, Judy Heumann, who is featured in the film.

WIHD launches a Mobile Medical Unit

Starting soon, WIHD's Mobile Medical Unit, a custom-designed van, will travel to where people with disabilities in the Hudson Valley live to expand much-needed access to healthcare. WIHD expects to provide 1,000 healthcare visits with the mobile unit within the first year. This initiative was made possible through grant funding from Mother Cabrini Health Foundation and The J.E. & Z.B. Butler Foundation. Donors, government officials, and agencies attended our ribbon-cutting ceremony and tour on October 18, 2023.

'Back to School' Drive

Having the right back-to-school supplies can help children get off to a great start and feel more comfortable and confident. We couldn’t be more grateful for the dedicated members of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, who, for over a decade, have donated backpacks and school supply kits to children participating in WIHD’s child welfare programs. And they have generously contributed to our Coat and Clothing Drive running through Nov. 17th. Drop-offs are accepted at WIHD.

Recap of the One Too Many 5K Run/Walk/Roll

to End Child Abuse

Thank you to the individuals and generous sponsors who supported WIHD’s Children's Advocacy Center by participating in the virtual One Too Many NY 5K to end child abuse. Over 850 people banded together across the statewide Children's Advocacy Center network, marking the largest turnout ever! Sponsors included Maier Markey & Justic LLP, RM Friedland, and Empire State Forensics.

Volunteer Highlight: Lucas Canter

Lucas, a Senior High School Student in Westchester, volunteers in the Assistive Technology (AT) Department of WIHD, piloting a project making adaptive video games that individuals with severe disabilities can play independently. Inspired in part by WIHD, his future goal is to find ways to improve AT devices to be more user-friendly and empower people to have a better quality of life.

Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND)

Last month, WIHD welcomed the Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) class of 2024! LEND is a year-long interdisciplinary training program funded by the federal government to develop trainees’ knowledge and skills to become leaders working with and on behalf of children with disabilities and their families, to improve health outcomes, and decrease disparities. The 2024 class comprises 21 students, representing 12 universities/colleges and 10 disciplines.
