Screenings of DONGTING VILLAGE and 500 MILES AWAY FROM HOME - July 7

500 Miles Creative LLC is thrilled to invite you to a special screening event on Sunday, July 7, at 7 pm at Rhizome DC, located at 6950 Maple St NW, Washington, DC 20012, next to the Takoma metro station. This event features two captivating films by WIFV member Qianhui (Joyce) Xu: DONGTING VILLAGE and 500 MILES AWAY FROM HOME. Join us for an unforgettable evening of cinema, followed by an in-person Q&A session with Qianhui to delve deeper into the themes and stories of these films.

Both films are centered around Jiuying, a Chinese underground artist living in Wuhan during the post-pandemic period, offering unique and profound perspectives on her life and experiences. DONGTING VILLAGE is an evocative experimental short that captures Passing Time in A Still Space within a historical Wuhan apartment, now home to Jiuying. This film transports you through time with its poignant sound and imagery, offering a unique glimpse into the lives and legacies of the apartment's past inhabitants.

500 MILES AWAY FROM HOME is an observational documentary that tells a heartwarming story of courage and forgiveness. Jiuying, a bipolar patient in financial crisis, and her mother Hengpei, a bodybuilder with a deviant past, navigate the journey of healing past wounds and embracing the future. Their story unfolds in picturesque cities and countryside, showcasing the transformative power of family bonds and unconditional love.

Tickets are available for $10-20, but seats are limited. Get your tickets here.

IN VINE WE TRUST

Produced/directed by Chrisa Giorgi

Climate change is affecting all aspects of agriculture, including viticulture - the cultivation of the grapevine. A small community of dedicated winegrowers located on the East Coast of America is implementing farming practices to not only adapt to the real-time impacts of climate change, but to combat it while building resistance by building biodiversity within their landscapes, restoring healthy soils, and sequestering carbon. This film will document and explore the journey of seven climate-conscientious winegrowers dedicated to farming practices that yield both benefits to the environment and quality wine.

Save the Date

5 TO 7 - July 15

It's heating up outside and onscreen with WIFV Film Club's latest series: Summer Strangers. Each month, from June through September, we'll discuss a film that finds its protagonists making a new friend — or foe — who will change their lives, often in disastrous ways. The Film Club is organized by Connie St. John and Ericka Boston.

July's selection is the 2014 film 5 TO 7. The film was written and directed by Victor Levin and stars Anton Yelchin, Bérénice Marlohe, Olivia Thirlby, Lambert Wilson, Frank Langella, Glenn Close and Eric Stoltz. Yelchin plays Brian, a 24-year-old writer who has an affair with a 33-year-old married French woman, Arielle (Marlohe). Arielle and her middle-aged husband, Valéry (Wilson), have an agreement allowing them to have extramarital affairs as long as they are confined to the hours between 5 and 7 p.m.

Monday, July 15, 7:30 pm, RSVP here

This is a meeting held on Zoom. You will receive login information with your registration confirmation.

Book Signing: Creative Resilience - 7/24

WIFV invites you to celebrate CREATIVE RESILIENCE: RECLAIMING YOUR POWER AS AN ARTIST with a reading, conversation, and signing with Erica Ginsberg

Join us in person at

Interface Media Group, 1233 20th Street NW

Wednesday, July 24, 2024, at 5:30 pm.

RSVP here

Whether you make a living full-time in the world of media or you do it on top of other work, there is no doubt that you do so out of love for telling meaningful stories and growing as an artist. However, we all face challenges of motivation, confidence, creative blocks, and the realities of rejection. Erica Ginsberg recently wrote the book Creative Resilience intended to address these challenges. She will join us to share from her book Creative Resilience and spark a conversation about how to navigate the ups and downs of the creative process. While she will have books available for purchase (for $19.99) and signing, you do not need to have read or purchase the book to get something from this talk.
