Earth Day is an annual event held on April 22nd to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First held in the United States on April 22, 1970, it has since become the largest secular observation day in the world and an opportunity to highlight the issues and environmental challenges affecting our world.
Celebrating Earth Day serves as a conscious reminder of how fragile our planet is and how important it is to protect it. We celebrate Earth Day to continue promoting environmental awareness and to remind us that we can protect the earth in our everyday lives as well.
There is no question that Earth has been a giving planet. Everything humans need to survive and thrive is provided by the natural world around us: food, water, medicine, materials for shelter, and even natural cycles such as climate and nutrients.
Saving our earth and its environment is highly important as it provides us with what we need to sustain life. Our well-being solely depends on the planet in which we live so it is our responsibility to take care of it.

Wondering how you can help? Here are seven things that you can do to help the environment:

1.      Eat sustainably and buy local when possible.
2.      Change your car driving habits.
3.      Notice how you use water.
4.      Reduce the amount of paper in your life .
5.      Use a refillable water bottle and reusable lunch containers.
6.      Be mindful of what you throw in the trash.
7.      Switch to reusable bags.

This month’s newsletter will focus on the importance of protecting the Earth. This issue includes a section on spring, an acknowledgement of Administrative Professionals' Day and an introduction to one of our Chapter Ambassadors, Tomeka Moore.

We will be hosting our 2021 Mentorship kick-off meeting on Wednesday, April 28, 2021. We are very excited about the program’s leadership development opportunities for the assigned protégés and look forward to highlighting the team in our May Newsletter.
It is spring and April showers bring pretty May flowers – spring and "springtime" refer to the season and to ideas of rebirth, rejuvenation, renewal, resurrection and regrowth. Take this time to renew as the season has intended as it makes the transition from the winter months in preparation for the summer months to come.

Spruce up your spring office decor by choosing the right plant for your home or office space:
If you have a home office, or if you are permitted to bring a small plant to your work environment, there are some great benefits to having a plant nearby. Not only do they spruce up your space and are aesthetically pleasing, they also have additional benefits.
Here are some facts about some popular plants for your productive space.
The snake plant helps reduce harmful toxins from the air such as formaldehyde, carbon dioxide, and airborne allergies. Plus they also help with Feng Shui.
The orchid helps absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen back into the air. Plus they are visually pleasing.
Although they may be small, they are mighty. Succulents help reduce toxins and assist with keeping your air fresh. They are also easy to maintain if you don’t necessarily have a “green thumb”.
Another natural air purifier, the lucky bamboo in many traditions is known to bring good luck and fortune to the household. When given as a gift, the number of stalks given determines the type of blessing:
·        Two stalks – love
·        Three stalks - happiness, long life and wealth
·        Five stalks – emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual health.
·        Six stalks – wealth and prosperity.
·        Seven stalks – good health
·        Eight stalks – growth and motivation
·        Nine stalks – good fortune
·        Ten stalks – completion and complacency
·        Twenty One stalks – wealth, health, and abundance
Another great air purifier, aloe plants help reduce carbon dioxide and provide oxygen back into the air around it. It is a succulent and does not require much maintenance. Plus, if you get a minor cut or burn, you can cut a leaf for the beneficial aloe vera to help heal and soothe the skin.

Welcome one of our newest Chapter Ambassadors Tomeka Moore.
I started my career with Spectrum in 2017 and I have had the pleasure of meeting some exceptional women who have played a key role in my development as a professional, mother, teacher and entrepreneur. I have had the opportunity to work alongside many women from various walks of life who have helped me to enhance my personal and professional leadership skills.
I have a passion to serve the community. I have a versatile background from playing the flute for ten years of my childhood, teaching at Miami Jacobs Career College as a laboratory assistant, fashion designing, and I am an aspiring author. Most recently I launched my very own online store called A’Moore Boutique, in hopes of someday utilizing the proceeds to launch a non-profit organization called Purple Hearts. Purple Hearts will support women and children who are victims of domestic violence and will bring awareness to the needs of the victims while they are transitioning to a new environment free from domestic violence. Growing up I faced many obstacles related to my learning disability dyslexia. I have fought hard not to use my illness as a crutch and I pride myself with owning my development every day of my life.
My journey with this wonderful organization has afforded me the opportunity to connect personally with women in the telecommunications field and to broaden my knowledge through networking with a host of leaders. Joining my local WICT chapter was important for me because I wanted to surround myself with likeminded women who could help me be the best leader and version of myself within the world of telecommunications. This is such an amazing organization to be a part of and in the future I would love to see continued growth and development of the vast learning opportunities that WICT offers for all women who take on the challenge of becoming a part of the world of telecommunications.
Spring Cleaning
Clean away the cobwebs
make light of dirt and grime
wave high those feather dusters
it's now spring cleaning time
for spring's first day has broken
and those windows must be cleaned
cold winder's grey has gone away
replaced with fresher scenes
ah! the joy of such spring cleaning
oh! the joy of household life
sometimes I am the paragon
of a 1950's wife!
