March 2023
Recently I was reading a reflection on St. Joseph that quoted Father Francis L. Filas, S.J. He responded to a question about St. Joseph saying simply, "Like wife, like husband." The man closest to Jesus and Mary rightly deserves all honor and praise. Jesus, Mary and Joseph make up the Holy Family, the unit of God's plan for the Incarnation and Redemption. The three of them are inseparable and should always be seen and understood together. We should not forget St. Joseph. He is a significant part of God’s plan.

In 1989, Pope John Paul II gave us a masterful explanation and reflection on the unique vocation of St. Joseph in God's plan of salvation with Redemptoris Custos (Guardian of the Redeemer). In it, the Pope discusses the mission of St. Joseph in the life of Christ and of the Church. He discusses the importance of Saint Joseph in the Holy Family and presents the his view of Saint Joseph's role in the plan of redemption. I must admit that I have not read many apostolic exhortations, but this document is short and very readable. During this month of March that honors St. Joseph, I want to encourage you to take some time to read this text. I have a link to it below. Join me in honoring this important member of the Holy Family.

At last, Winter is soon over! The first day of Spring is Monday, March 20, 2023, at 5:24 p.m. EDT. It’s time to get out the lawn and the garden tools as things start to turn green! Speaking of green, it’s also time to dig into your wallets and pull out some green to pay for registrations to our Annual Benefit Dinner. This is an important source of funds for Holy Family Radio, and we need you to step up and come attend the Dinner on April 21st.We will be at the Sheraton Harrisburg Hershey Hotel this year. Come ready to have a good time and to meet our Speaker, Kevin Reilly, former Eagles football player and sports announcer. He is a great inspirational speaker and we are sure that you will enjoy him. Oh yes, keep an eye out for Holy Family Radio’s Dinner Announcement on two area billboards the last week of March and first week of April. There will be one on the West Shore and one on the East Shore. We don’t know the exact locations yet, but we are excited to know that we will get some publicity due to the generosity of Lamar Advertising Company.
Also happening over the next few months are goodwill visits to area Knights of Columbus Councils. Joe Nebistinsky and I are attending meetings of the local councils to share information about the Station. We want to be sure that they are aware of the opportunities to get their fundraising events and good works promoted on our Station. We also want to let the members of the Councils know that we have a show dedicated strictly to them – “Knight Talk.” We have been taking for granted that the Knights know about the show, but we are finding that is not true. We are making every effort to publicize what Holy Family Radio is all about and let people know that we are a great resource for Central Pennsylvania.
That’s about it for this month. Just remember, if you are in or near Shiremanstown any Tuesday or Thursday morning, drop in to visit. The welcome mat is always out.

In the Church, we have a lot of programs that we create to get people more interested in the Catholic Faith. Some of these programs have worked really well (That Man is You, Abiding Together, etc), and some have fallen very flat.

But as awesome as some of these groups have been, they won't touch the one thing we have that will revive the Catholic Faith. And it isn't a "program". It's the Sacrament of Confession.

For most of us, it is the one moment in our faith where we meet and speak to Our God face-to-face (or anonymously), and pour out our heart in a real way. Prayer should be this way, but that face-to-face meeting with the priest, over such personal details, makes us FEEL His presence. It is so painful at times, because what we have to say is real, and has done real damage to us. But to get it out...that is FREEDOM!

This Lent, brothers and sisters, is the perfect time to feel this Freedom. It is the reason He died for us. Period. As the Eucharistic Prayer says, "...the Blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many, for the FORGIVENESS OF SINS." This Lent, let's join ourselves to His Passion by going to Confession, so that we may feel His Resurrection!

March: Dedicated to St. Joseph

March is the month of devotion to St. Joseph, whose Solemity falls on March 19th. The date of the Solemnity of St. Joseph dates back to the end of the 15th century. Within the next few centuries, devoting the entire month of March to St. Joseph became part of tradition.

In a society which seems to discourage the importance of marriage and fatherhood, St. Joseph, the spouse of the Virgin and the man given the responsibility of raising Jesus, is an incredible model of an obedient, faithful, Christian father.

St. Joseph is the patron saint of the Universal Church, unborn babies, families, fathers, immigrants, social justice, carpenters, those seeking employment, realtors, and a happy death. His greatest patronage, however, is that of the Universal Church, an office that can be said to have begun with the “domestic church” of the Holy Family of Nazareth. Just as he diligently watched over the Christ Child, he continues to protect the Mystical Body of Christ, the Church.

The Prayer to St Joseph
Oh St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interests and desires.
Oh St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession and obtain for me from your Divine Son all spiritual blessings through Jesus Christ, our Lord; so that having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers.
Oh St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you and Jesus asleep in your arms. I dare not approach while he reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss his fine head for me, and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, patron of departing souls, pray for us.

Joke of the Month
A Jesuit, a Dominican, and a Franciscan were walking along an old road, debating the greatness of their orders. Suddenly, an apparition of the Holy Family appeared in front of them with Jesus in a manger and Mary and Joseph praying over Him. The Franciscan fell on his face, overcome with awe at the sight of God born in such poverty. The Dominican fell to his knees, adoring the beautiful reflection of the Trinity and the Holy Family. The Jesuit walked up to Joseph, put his arm around his shoulder, and said, “So, have you thought about where to send him to school?”
Prayer for Holy Family Radio
Gracious and loving Father,
your Son, the Incarnate Word,
gave us the joy and the duty
of proclaiming the Gospel
to all who will listen.
Bless Holy Family Radio in its apostolate
 of announcing the Good News.
Strengthen them for the work
of making the truths of our faith
more fully known and more faithfully lived.
 Through its programs,
may Your Saving
Word enter the minds and hearts of listeners
and produce an abundant harvest for Your Kingdom.
We pray this through Christ our Lord
 Amen.
