ANGELS ARE A TRUTH OF OUR FAITH!

FEAST OF THE ARCHANGELS

SEPTEMBER 29

"The existence of the spiritual, non-corporeal beings that Sacred Scripture usually calls 'angels' is a truth of faith."

(Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph 328)

The word, "angel," comes from the Greek word,

"aggelos," which means, "messenger."

The Bible recognizes "nine choirs" of angels,

each with a name and a purpose.

Archangels are one choir and recognized as leaders helping humanity, entrusted by God with special duties.

Michael means "One who is like God."

Gabriel means "God is my strength."

Raphael means "God is my health."

grateful to be at Notre Dame because

of the school’s emphasis on faith.

“That’s important for me.

I want our guys to wonder about

REPRESENTATIVES FROM THE CATHOLIC CHURCH

The Catholic Church was well represented at Queen Elizabeth's service.

> Cardinal Vincent Nichols of Westminster

read the fifth of seven prayers,

giving thanks for the Queen’s commitment to the Commonwealth

and praying that

the political association of 56 member states would strive

for the common good and

the “establishment of righteousness and peace.”

> Also in attendance were the United Kingdom’s

three other leading Catholic prelates:

Archbishop Leo Cushley of St. Andrews and Edinburgh,

Archbishop Mark O’Toole of Cardiff,

and Archbishop Eamon Martin, primate of all Ireland.

> Liverpool-born Archbishop Paul Gallagher,

the Vatican’s “foreign minister,”

represented Pope Francis and the Holy See.

 Beautiful Blessing On Medicine

The Roman Ritual presents the prayer below to ask God's blessing on the medicine we take.

V: Our help is in the name of the Lord.

R: Who made heaven and earth.

V: The Lord be with you.

R: And with your spirit.

Let us pray: O our God! You marvelously created man

and more marvelously redeemed him.

Please help with Your numerous aids the human condition

in the land of Your children, who are always susceptible to diverse infirmities.

Answer our prayers and bless these medicines (and medical instruments)

so that everyone who uses them or is under their influence

may enjoy the presence of Your providence in body and soul.

You who, through Your Son Jesus Christ,

healed so many infirmities,

and who reigns with Him and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.

Amen.

GOSPEL READING REFLECTION

The Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Year C - Lk 16:19-31

JUSTICE AND MERCY!

"My child, remember that you received

what was good during your lifetime

while Lazarus likewise received what was bad;

but now he is comforted here, whereas you are tormented.

Moreover, between us and you a great chasm is established

to prevent anyone from crossing who might wish to go

from our side to yours or from your side to ours."

  • In the Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus, the problem with the rich man was not his wealth. The parable does not say he became rich dishonestly (although he may have). His problem was that he didn’t “listen to,” that is, obey, Moses and the prophets. He did not repent of his sins, obey the law, and love God above all and his neighbor as himself. One example of this is the way he ignored his fellow Jew and therefore his neighbor, Lazarus, who sat at his door begging.

  • The rich man received good things during his life. He lived like the rich diners that Amos decries. He did nothing for those in need around him. In the parable, God rewards him with torment.

  • Lazarus received during his life what was bad—poverty and illness—like the unfortunates the Psalm says God helps. God rewards Lazarus with comfort in the “bosom of Abraham” for his endurance of suffering on earth.

  • Through this parable, Our Lord is saying his message continues the message of Moses and the prophets. If we won’t love God and neighbor, we won’t listen to Christ, even if he does something stupendous, like raise men from the dead or rise from the dead himself.

 ANSWER TO QUIZ

LADYBUGS

Everyone loves ladybugs!

Not only are they eye-catching

—with their rosy-red mantles and dapper spots—

they also consume pests that cause

serious trouble for gardeners and farmers.

An adult ladybug can eat 75 aphids a day!

Legend has it...

that back in medieval times,

terrible pests devastated crops in Europe.

In danger of losing their livelihood and source of sustenance, the people prayed to Our Lady for assistance.

Soon, a great swarm of small beetles

—with red shells and black spots—

came and ate up the offending pests.

The crops were saved,

and the people named the miniature heroes

after Our Lady, hence “ladybug.”

BOOK

RECOMMENDATION

We need to be armed for battle!

At all times, and especially during these crazy times in this vale of tears,

we need to lay our foundation in Christ Jesus.

Spiritual reading helps us build and strengthen that foundation.

This week's recommendation is:

The VIRTUES

by John Garvey

John Garvey served as President of the Catholic University of America for 12 years,

working to introduce students

to the virtuous life

– the only true way to happiness.

Garvey’s new book “The Virtues” draws from his commencement addresses to CUA graduates.

“The book is a bunch of conversations,” he says.

“I’ve been giving commencement speeches about virtues for 25 years.…

So you can read it out loud, and it won’t sound like you’re reading a book:

It’ll sound like you’re saying something

because I was saying them out loud.”

 Garvey writes:

"The intellectual life depends on the moral life.

Without virtue we cannot sustain the practices

necessary for advanced learning.

In fact, without virtue, it's hard to see what the purpose of the university is.

Learning begins with love (for the truth).

If we don't have that, it's hard to know

why we would bother with education at all."

We pray you will be excited to embark on purposeful spiritual reading as a way to build a more prayer-filled, Christ centered life.
