Police Department Update:

Monday's Traffic Enforcement

Pedestrian grants from the state provide financial funding for pedestrian enforcement at a local level. We were able to use pedestrian grant funding this past Monday (7/15) to conduct pedestrian/bicycle safety enforcement. During a 4 hour time frame, officers conducted 11 traffic stops, wrote 9 failure to yield right-of-way to a pedestrian, wrote a citation for operating a motor vehicle without proof of insurance, and wrote a citation for non-registration of automobile. We have additional traffic grant assignments throughout the year.

Weekly Update 7/8-7/15:

On 7/12 at 1:40 p.m., officers responded to the 5600blk N Lydell on report of an entry in progress to a residence. The suspect was located, resisted arrest but was ultimately arrested. The 911 caller chose not to pursue criminal charges for the man entering his home as the man appeared to have mental health issues. The suspect was given a municipal citation for resisting arrest and released. On 7/14 at 8:42 p.m., an officer attempted a traffic stop on a stolen vehicle in the 4800blk N Santa Monica. The vehicle fled and a pursuit ensued. The pursuit was terminated after the officer lost sight of the vehicle in Milwaukee.

Department of Public Works Updates:

Storm Sewer Emergency Repairs Update:

The Village experienced a failure of a primary storm sewer on June 9, 2024, within Big Bay and Buckley Park. Since that time, Village staff along with contractors and engineers have worked to install temporary emergency measures to stabilize, limit future settlement, and protect existing utilities. A 36” temporary relief storm sewer was installed to provide limited storm water drainage from the tributary area. Emergency measures have now shifted from temporary emergency efforts to permanent repairs. On July 1, the Village Board approved direction for staff to engage with a design – build process to hire a construction manager to assist with permanent repairs to the failed storm sewer outfall. Once a construction manager has been selected, design and engineering will occur shortly after with construction activities anticipated to occur this construction season. Big Bay and Buckley Park will remain closed to the public as we continue to manage construction activities.

Architecturally Significant and Historic Sites of Whitefish Bay- Updated Edition

The Village’s historic preservation commission maintains an inventory of the architecturally significant and historic sites. Over 240 sites have been placed on the inventory, the majority of which display sidewalk medallions in front of the properties.

The Commission maintains information and photographs for each of the sites and, in 2022, published a book that summarizes this data. That book was recently updated to include additional sites that were recognized through June of this year.

The updated version of the book is now available for sale at the library for $20, with net proceeds pledged to support the Whitefish Bay Library. A few copies of the previous version remain available and are being sold at cost ($10).

The Inventory is certainly not complete—many more sites are eligible, and will be added when applications are received with suitable documentation.

Village residents are encouraged to research and submit applications to have their homes added to the Inventory. The application form is available on the Village’s website at: https://www.wfbvillage.gov/155/Historic-Preservation-Commission, along with information on researching your Whitefish Bay home.
