Village of Whitefish Bay Official Weekly Newsletter

Message from the Village President, Kevin Buckley

Village-wide property assessment letters have been mailed.

Revaluations are periodically required to assure the tax burden is distributed equitably and uniformly among property owners, triggered by Wisconsin laws.

Property values have changed significantly in Whitefish Bay, and the average increase was about 45%. If the value of your home went up 40-50%, your property taxes should not significantly change due to your new assessment.

If you have questions, read the inserts included with your assessment letter, and read the newsletter story below.

Have a great week! -kb

Why Is The Village Hall Phone Ringing?

When is the last day to pay property taxes through the Village? The last day to pay any outstanding balances on 2023 tax bills is Wednesday, July 31, 2024. Payment needs to be received in person at Village Hall (5300 N Marlborough Drive), in the drop box (between the two front doors at Village Hall), or online by July 31. After July 31, all outstanding 2023 tax balances are transferred to Milwaukee County and payment will no longer be accepted through the Village. Village Hall Update:

As is common following a property assessment revaluation project, the Village of Whitefish Bay anticipates receiving inquiries about the impact that revised assessments will have on property taxes. There is a misconception that an increased assessment will automatically lead to a tax increase.

Overall, the Village of Whitefish Bay experienced about a 45% increase in assessed value since the last revaluation in 2019. However, revaluations are revenue neutral. In other words, an increase in total property value does not necessarily mean that the Village of Whitefish Bay and/or other taxing jurisdictions will collect more tax dollars. Property assessments are used to determine each owner’s share of the total tax burden. Therefore, some owner’s shares will increase, some will decrease and some will stay about the same depending on how their assessment changed in relation to the average increase of about 45%. Property owners may schedule an Open Book appointment to discuss their property assessment with a member of the Assessor’s staff by visiting https://accurateassessor.powerappsportals.com/Open-Book/.

The 2024 tax rate will be available in December after each of the different taxing authorities (Milwaukee County, Village of Whitefish Bay, Whitefish Bay School District, MATC, and MMSD) have established their respective tax levies.

Save the date! The Whitefish Bay Bike Safety Rodeo will be held on Saturday, September 7, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., at the Lydell Community Center

Police Department Update:

Tuesday's Traffic Enforcement

Traffic grants from the state provide financial funding for traffic enforcement at a local level. We were able to use traffic grant funding this past Tuesday (7/9) to conduct pedestrian/bicycle safety enforcement. During a 4 hour time frame, officers conducted 14 traffic stops, wrote 9 failure to yield right-of-way to a pedestrian/bicyclist/EPAMD/electric scooter, wrote an additional 5 traffic citations and made 1 arrest for marijuana possession. We have additional traffic grant assignments throughout the year. Do your part to make the roads safe: stop for pedestrians in the crosswalk, wear your seatbelt, slow down and don’t drink and drive!

Weekly update 7/1-7/8: Thank you to everyone that made the 4th of July festivities possible! Lots of fun as usual. In other happenings, we had another bike theft this week from the 300blk E Silver Spring. On 7/2 at 2:40 p.m., a driver rolled through the stop sign at E Beaumont Ave/N Santa Monica Blvd and struck a s/b juvenile bicyclist. The bicyclist was transported to the hospital for his injuries, and the driver was cited for failure to yield the right of way to a bicyclist. On 7/7 at 2:55 p.m., a female subject having a mental health crisis intentionally threw herself in front of a passing vehicle in the 400blk E Henry Clay St. She was transported to the hospital for her injuries and to receive mental health treatment.

Department of Public Works Update:

Water Testing by North Shore Water Commission

The North Shore Water Commission is responsible for the coordination of lead and copper sample collections used for regulatory compliance. In addition, the Commission manages and monitors a corrosion control inhibitor called orthophosphate to reduce the amount of lead and copper that can leach from pipes and plumbing materials owned by member municipalities and their property owners. The Village continues to be in compliance with all lead and copper levels. Additional details can be reviewed as part of the 2023 Annual Water Quality Report.
