Message from the Village President, Kevin Buckley
Last week’s CDA meeting had two interesting items:
• The North Shore Wellness Collective’s $75,000 grant application was recommended. The NSWC is a group of pregnancy and postpartum healthcare and fitness professionals. Their studio will offer prenatal/postpartum therapy, kids yoga classes, parenting and children related workshops and will be a unique addition to our village. They expect to open this summer.
• The CDA debated the future of the grant program, and discussed the Village’s primary desire to attract new bars, restaurants and entertainment operators to Silver Spring.
Have a great Spring Break! -kb

Click here to view the March 22, 2023 Weekly Summary from the North Shore Health Department
North Shore Health Department Healthy Highlight 3/22/2023: National Drugs and Alcohol Facts Week
National Drug & Alcohol Facts Week (NDAFW) is an annual, week-long health observance that inspires dialogue about the science of drug use and addiction among youth.
The Milwaukee County Overdose Dashboard includes data on fatal overdoses from the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner and nonfatal overdose events from the Milwaukee County Office of Emergency Management. The North Shore zip codes can be filtered on the map to see fatal and non-fatal overdoses for any time frame from January 2018 to December 2022.
Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office estimates there were 678 drug-overdose deaths in the county in 2022 (some cases still pending toxicology). That is a 5 percent increase over the previous year and the fourth year in a row the county broke that record.
In 2021, 644 people died of a drug overdose in Milwaukee County. Around 80 percent of the drug deaths involved fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that's 50 to 100 times stronger than morphine.
A recent DEA report warns the American public of a sharp increase in the trafficking of fentanyl mixed with xylazine. Xylazine, also known as “Tranq,” is a powerful sedative that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved for veterinary use. The DEA Laboratory System is reporting that in 2022 approximately 23% of fentanyl powder and 7% of fentanyl pills seized by the DEA contained xylazine.

The next Drug Take Back Day will be held April 22, 2023. Prescription and over-the-counter medications may be disposed of at Drug Take Back Day collection sites, including capsules, creams, inhalers, non-aerosol sprays, ointments, patches, pills, and vials.
