Village of Whitefish Bay Official Weekly Newsletter

Message from the Village President, Kevin Buckley

After a year of rest, the Great Pumpkin is again arriving in Whitefish Bay.

In the late 1970s, Whitefish Bay resident Gordy Falk started carving pumpkins and displaying them on his front lawn, drawing hundreds of people to Carlisle Avenue each October.

Later, Falk made a straight-to-VHS movie called "Great Faces" which takes the viewer into his kitchen where he describes his carving technique. It can be viewed here on YouTube.

Continuing the tradition, the 37th Great Pumpkin Fest opens this Wednesday night, with world-famous resident Pat McCurdy taking the stage at Ghoulhouse Park. See below for details.

Have a spooky week! -kb

Updates from the Department of Public Works:

Fall Leaf Collection:

Village Requests Residents NOT Use Leaf Collection / Yard Waste Bags: The Whitefish Bay Public Works Department crews have been collecting leaves and yard waste placed in the roadway curb area by Village residents. The Village requests that residents do not put leaves and yard waste in leaf collection bags.

Residents can place leaves and small yard waste debris directly in the roadway near the curb. Please place leaves away from storm inlets as leaf decay can clog storm sewers and add unwanted material to Lake Michigan. Branches can still be left in the parkway area for brush chipper collection at this time.

Yard waste collected by Public Works is temporarily stored at a DNR-approved joint use municipal site in Glendale until it is hauled away, recycled, and turned into organic compost.

Thank you for your cooperation and helping our Public Works Department maintain efficiency during the leaf collection season!

Old School House Park Temporarily Closed for Maintenance

Old School House Park (the Village fountain park across from the Whitefish Bay Public Library) is temporarily closed for maintenance work. Forward Contractors is under contract with the Village of Whitefish Bay to remove the current interior walkways surrounding the fountain and re-install stamped concrete sidewalks. A new irrigation system for the surrounding flower beds will also be installed as part of this project. This work should take about three weeks to complete – just in time for the annual Great Pumpkin Festival!

Any questions, feel free to call Pat McCarthy, Public Works Superintendent, at 414-962-6690 Ext. 301.

Whitefish Bay TALKS: Frank Lloyd Wright's Wisconsin With Author Kristine Hansen

Tuesday, November 14, 6:30 p.m.

Please Register- https://www.wfblibrary.org/our_events/?eid=1523

America’s most famous architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, was born in 1867 in the rolling hills of Richland Center, Wisconsin, to a family of Unitarians. Even with world-class commissions like New York City’s Guggenheim Museum, his organic architecture remains rooted in Wisconsin’s landscape, from affordable-housing prototypes in Milwaukee to his summer home and architecture school in rural Spring Green. This comprehensive guide to Wright’s designs (and those of his protégés) that are open to the public—as well as insider historical information about sites now demolished, and those available for “drive-bys” only—is for the architecture or history fan looking for tours, overnight stays or creative inspiration.

About the Presenter: Kristine Hansen

Based in Milwaukee’s Bay View neighborhood, Kristine Hansen is a nationally recognized design and travel author with articles published on Travel + Leisure’s and Architectural Digest’s websites, as well as in Time, Midwest Living, and Milwaukee Magazine. She is also the author of Wisconsin Cheese Cookbook: Creamy, Cheesy, Sweet, and Savory Recipes from the State’s Best Creameries.

Thanks in advance for your generosity.

"Being an educator and working with the younger students there have been many days I have watched students either lose their recess or have to stand on the blacktop while their friends and classmates are having the time of their life playing in the snow. It absolutely breaks my hearts to have to tell children that because they don’t have boots or snow pants that they can’t play in the snow." - Educator and organizer, Mariah Smith

Milwaukee Area Domestic Control Commission (MADACC):

Reduce the Scares for Your Pets This Halloween

As Halloween approaches MADACC wanted to share a few tips and tricks to keep your pets safe.

If your pet is going to wear a costume and go trick-or-treating with the family, take time in advance to get your pet used to the costume. If they really do not want to wear it, it is best to let them go without it. Do use a reflective leash or collar to ensure that your dog is visible to drivers and other pedestrians.

Most experts agree that leaving your dog home on Halloween is the best plan. Trick-or-treating is a hectic time with children running around, decorations that can be frightening and unusual sounds. Dogs will try to escape from scary situations even with their owner holding their leash, so it is important to have current contact information on both their collar and their microchip.

Before trick-or-treating begins and the candy is ready to be distributed make sure your dogs and cats are somewhere secure and quiet in the house. Constant knocking, doorbell ringing, door opening, and strangers’ voices can be a terrifying experience for a furry friend. It is quite easy for a pet to slip out of the door with that chaos.

Keep ALL candy away from your pets. Be vigilant for the big bowl of candy on the ground as your dog can quickly swallow candy that you might not know the ingredients of. Some candy can be deadly to pets.

Halloween scares are not for pets!
