Welcome back Secretary. Thank you for keeping up with the Partnership!

Partnership for Petersburg Weekly Update

An internal newsletter covering the latest secretariat highlights on the Partnership for Petersburg, an initiative between the City of Petersburg and the Commonwealth of Virginia. This partnership provides the Petersburg locality full ownership of this meaningful initiative, with support from the Commonwealth, to see it become one of the best cities to live, work, and raise a family.

What our team did in the past week...

During the past week:

· the First Lady held numerous events uplifting the Commonwealth;

· Secretary James held the first Commonwealth Coffee: Women of Influence event; and

Partnership for Petersburg Operations Coordinator, Meade Spotts, had a great visit to Highland Springs Elementary school for their career day!

Petersburg Fact of the Week

U.S. Customs House

Built of Petersburg granite and constructed between 1856 and 1860, the U.S. Customs House and Post Office was designed by Ammi B. Young, architect of the U.S. Treasury Department building in Washington D.C. The decision to add the third story was made during construction. During the Civil War, this upper story served as headquarters for the Confederate military department of Southern Virginia and North Carolina, commanded variously by James Longstreet, D.H. Hill, George E. Pickett, and P.G.T. Beauregard.

The three southern bays of the building were added between 1908 and 1910. In 1938, the building was renovated as part of a Works Progress Administration project to become Petersburg’s City Hall, and retains that use today.
