WDIY Classics
Host: Andrew Tomlinson
Monday, 9 a.m - 12 p.m.
Highlights today include Antonin Dvorak’s entertaining and evocative 8th Symphony, written just before he came to New York and wrote his much-loved New World Symphony. This contrasts with some of Debussy’s delightful early piano music which, although written at the same time, introduced a much different sound world, more free-flowing and impressionistic. We’ll hear JS Bach’s effervescent Wedding Cantata, written in his early years in Weimar, along with music written by his famous son Carl Philip Emmanuel from half a century later, including his charming double concerto for harpsichord and fortepiano – the only one of its kind. Sparkling Italian orchestral music from Caldara and Corelli from the late 1600s provides some Southern European excitement to our time together, and viol compositions of the Elizabethan composer Alfonso Ferrabasco the Younger showcase the work of this consummate musical survivor, who played at the funeral of Queen Elizabeth I of England, and thrived over the subsequent years of change in the English Court, eventually to be appointed as King’s Composer by Charles I.
