Advocates for Children

Rosalind Miller, Chair

Make the Holidays Bright for Foster Kids

Coachella Valley Foster Kids is the only non-profit in our area that provides resources and necessities to change a foster youth’s life trajectory. CVFK offers educational resources, support services for foster families, emergency care kits, mental health support, court support, stuffed animals, and inspirational experiences.

WCI is collecting holiday gifts for CV foster kids at the November meeting. Gift items are for ages 3 to 18. Examples are LEGOS, arts and crafts supplies, bikes, electronics, makeup, toys, project kits, stuffed animals, pajamas, and anything else a child would enjoy as a holiday gift. For many of these kids, this will be the only gift they receive for the holidays. The gifts can be wrapped or unwrapped. Please tape a note on the front of wrapped gifts about what is inside and the age range.

CV Foster kids could also use donations of suitcases, duffle bags, clothing, books, and any other items that children can use, including hygiene products. The items can be gently used and do not need to be brand new.

Thank you, WCI, for your continued support in changing the lives of others, especially local foster children.

PAINT EL PASEO PINK WALK

Lorraine Velona, Project Champion

Saturday, October 14th

 Kickoff at 7:30 a.m.

Walk Starts at 8:00 a.m.

WCI Members Meeting at 7:30 a.m. Details Below

The Desert Cancer Foundation event PAINT EL PASEO PINK” is a community walk that takes place on October 14th to help raise awareness for Cancer and to raise much needed funds for Desert Cancer Foundation (DCF) starting at 8:00 a.m. at the Gardens on El Paseo. DCF raises money to help local residents who lack health insurance or sufficient funds to pay for their medical care.

Because No One Budgets for Cancer

Your support and all funds raised will help provide for residents who need financial assistance with cancer care and treatment. What a fabulous organization! It’s bad enough being diagnosed with cancer, but the reality of the cost is very scary. I know. Last July 2022, I was diagnosed with anal cancer, going through radiation and chemo treatments for 6 ½ weeks M-F. I was extremely concerned about how much it was going to cost us. The cost was staggering. Fortunately, my insurance covered a good portion of it and now I’m cancer free. But, for someone who doesn’t have the financial means, it can be a death sentence.

I strongly encourage you, your family, and friends to register and come walk with me and other fellow WCI members to help others who are fighting for their lives and help them ease their financial worries.

If you are unable to attend, then please donate what you can. No amount is too small.

Join the Fight to End Alzheimer’s

 Arlene Handler-Smith

Saturday, November 4th, 2023

Walk Starts at 9:30 a.m.

Festival Area Opens 8:00 a.m.; Opening Ceremony 9:00 a.m.

Palm Desert Civic Center Park

The countdown is on! Only 41 days until the Walk to End Alzheimer's! Alzheimer's isn't waiting — and neither am I. This year, I'm participating in the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's® to raise funds and awareness for Alzheimer's care, support, and research. Will you stand with me in this fight by joining my team?

Registration is easy; visit my Walk to End Alzheimer's page to join me. If you cannot participate, please consider donating to my fundraising efforts. Every dollar you donate helps the Alzheimer's Association® provide care and support to all those facing Alzheimer's and all other dementia and advance critical research.

Did you know:

  • One in three seniors dies with Alzheimer's or another dementia.
  • More than six million Americans are living with Alzheimer's.
  • Over eleven million people are serving as unpaid caregivers.
  • More than ten million American women are either living with Alzheimer's disease or caring for someone who has it.
  • Dementia is one of the costliest conditions in society.
  • Dementia is a disease symptom and not a normal part of aging. There are over 100 diseases that may cause dementia. The four most common causes of dementia include Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, Parkinson's, and dementia with Lewy bodies.
  • Many employers sponsor matching gift programs and will provide matching charitable contributions for donations made by their employees. Some companies also offer volunteer grants for employee service hours. When you donate to your local Walk to End Alzheimer's®, search for your company under the Matching Gifts section of the online form. Once your donation is complete, you'll receive an email with instructions on submitting a matching gift request through your employer.

If you've already donated, you can visit alz.org/walkmatch to search for your company and find the steps to submit a matching gift request through your employer.

Once a matching gift is verified (if requested), received, and processed by the Alzheimer's Association, the donation will be credited to the specified Walk participant, team, or event.

I hope you will stand with me in this fight. Together, we can end Alzheimer's.               #ENDALZ and #Walk2EndAlz

Thank you! Arlene & Fran

President #33 Alice Sakemi 1955

Alice was our shortest-serving president. She served from June 1st, 1955, to September 25th, 1955, when she was tragically killed in a car accident coming home from the Los Angeles Fair in Pomona. Alice’s son, Stephen Sakemi, who later died at age 34, was the only survivor of the car accident.

She was a large part of the Japanese Agriculture Community. Her husband was a large landowner and served as the Director of the Coachella Valley Farmer’s Association. Alice was the Executive Secretary of the Riverside County Red Cross.

A picture of Alice has not yet been located, but the search continues. Consider remembering Alice Sakemi by sponsoring her name!

Yard of the Month

The Avalos Family, 44313 Laurel St, Indio

Upon purchasing their home (picture on top left), the Avalos family applied for residential rebates offered by Indio Water Authority. After removing the grass, they installed smart irrigation and quickly reduced water demand. The top right and bottom photos show the yard as it is today. Now, water helps grow edible cacti, chilis, and fruit trees (lemon, orange, grapefruit, and mandarin). Thank you so much, Avalos Family, for sharing your beautiful yard.

Women’s History

Transportation in Early Indio

Continued from Past President Lois Wood’s Recollections

Travel by horse and buggy was for limited distances, and travel by automobile was a slow and uncertain venture. Only four or five cars were in the Indio area in 1914, and not many in the whole valley.

If it became necessary to travel to Los Angeles (always called “The City”) or to points in between, one had to resort to the “local” on the railroad, called the “Sidewinder,” which ran from the Imperial Valley to Los Angeles.

It was an experience to ride that coach, especially in summer. The daily train was almost full of passengers when it reached Indio at 11:00 a.m. It seemed that those already aboard had opened their lunch baskets and spread out to occupy all the seats while lunching. By the time the train reached Indio, remnants of the repast had been left all over the seats and the floor.

The coach was not air conditioned; the seats were hard and uncomfortable. No one used that method of translation through choice.

Meet Our New Member

Reiko Simmons

I would like to introduce myself as a new member of the Woman’s Club of Indio.

I am Reiko Mary Simmons, and as my first name indicates, I grew up in Japan. We migrated to the U.S. when I was 17 years of age. I graduated from Michigan State University and became a teacher.

I come from a long line of educators; my grandfather, father, aunt, and cousins were all teachers. I’ve enjoyed teaching students of all ages from 1964 until just last year, when I retired from teaching chemistry at a college in Cleveland, Ohio. During those years, I had the opportunity to go back to school and become involved in teaching elementary and special education students and supervising teachers. Nearing retirement age, I returned to school again and received degrees in Masters and PhD in Chemistry.

I am married and have two grown daughters and three grandchildren. Since retirement, I have been teaching my twin grandsons, who are nine years of age.

I have many areas of interest, and it is hard to say what I enjoy most. You can find me participating in water aerobics, knitting, cooking, enjoying music, and reading any day! You can find me carrying a book everywhere! I am bilingual and able to speak, read, and write in Japanese.

When Linda Mesman-Poirot invited me to join WCI, her descriptions of activities appeared to suit my strong interests in promoting STEM skills, education, and the future of young women. For over two decades, I was with an organization at the university level promoting Women in Chemistry. I look forward to continuing to achieve the same objective with younger students.

Volunteer Spirit

Seven members earned gold stars by representing you at the De Anza District Conference in Corona on Monday, September 18th: Marlon Carrier, Mickie Reed, Claire Whitney, Lana Bathen, Peg Boortz, Vicky Rutherford, and Barbara Fairbairn. After the business meeting, Mickie organized a scavenger hunt that had everyone hurrying around the room looking for people who matched questions. (Vicky was the answer to the birthday question and Mickie was the nightclub singer). In keeping with the National Day of Service, WCI members donated non-perishable food to Carol’s Kitchen, a nonprofit organization supported by the Corona club. The director of Carol’s Kitchen spoke about the nonprofit’s history and the four cities it services, and related poignant stories about clients who benefited greatly from their services. This was followed by the club presidents reporting their clubs’ National Day of Service projects. It was a long but interesting day.
