Celebrating Connection: 2023 Impact Report 💛
Many of us started 2023 eager for more connections after years of distance and isolation. Whether living on or visiting Whidbey Island–one immediately senses deep ties to people and this place.
As a growing community foundation, we know the value of connections. Connecting with nonprofits and donors, connecting with community leaders, connecting emerging ideas with existing resources, and connecting these components together. It’s a weaver’s role we lean into and one that we believe will be essential as WCF serves the changing needs of our community.
And so, in 2023, we celebrated these relationships!

Professional Advisor Corner
Emotional Ties to Stock, Mixing Business with Charity, and Locking in the Exemption
As an advisor, you’ve certainly experienced clients’ emotions running wild! Confronting mortality, addressing complex family relationships, and discussing money all come with financial planning’s often rocky terrain. The community foundation can help when you encounter a charitably-minded client who is devoted to a particular stock and may be reluctant to take the tax-savvy step of giving it to charity.
”Doing well by doing good” is a popular notion in corporate giving programs. Many of your clients may be in positions to influence corporate giving strategies. The community foundation can support you as you advise clients about avoiding tax pitfalls and conflicts of interest as clients and their work colleagues create charitable giving strategies that align with business purposes.
If it feels like the topic of the estate tax exemption sunset is heating up, you are right! More and more of your clients are becoming aware of the change in the law that is slated to occur at the end of 2025 unless legislation intervenes. Be sure you know the basics about how this change could impact your clients, including the ways charitable giving and the community foundation can fit into smart planning.
Stack the stats in your favor, trends among millionaire donors, and sunset reminders
By the time summer rolls around, reflecting on what happened last year may feel like cognitive whiplash. That’s not the case, though, with the statistics from the annual Giving USA report that are released every June for the prior year. The team at the community foundation reviews the findings closely so that we can identify trends and strategies that could help you and other nonprofits.
A recent study sheds light on how high net-worth people who’ve made their own money tend to approach philanthropy. As it turns out, self-made millionaires are more likely to give to charity than those who inherited their wealth–a whopping 93% reported doing so. People with legacy wealth are still likely to be philanthropic, but only 74% reported that they give to charity.
As a reminder, the estate tax exemption is the total amount a taxpayer can leave to family and other individuals during life and at death before the hefty federal gift and estate tax kicks in. This exemption is scheduled to drop big time after December 25, 2025. For 2024, the estate tax exemption is $13.61 million per individual, or $27.22 million per married couple.

Tax laws up in the air, philanthropy personalities, and forward-worthy reading material
Election years are interesting for many reasons! For philanthropists and their advisors, election years can be tricky because it’s impossible to predict what might happen with the tax laws. That’s certainly the case in 2024. The community foundation can help you and your advisors navigate various approaches to charitable strategies, even when the tax laws themselves are up in the air.
Whether you’ve been involved in philanthropy for many years or you're just starting out on your charitable giving journey, you’ve likely noticed that there are many, many ways to support the causes you love. The community foundation can help you evaluate various giving vehicles based on your own “charitable giving personality type.”
The team at the community foundation wants to help you help your advisors stay up-to-date on legal and tax developments that might impact the charitable giving components in your estate and financial plan. We’re happy to offer tips and reading material to share with your attorneys, accountants, and financial advisors, and our team is always available to join a discussion.
