USCCB URGES CHANGES TO HEALTH CARE ACT OF 2017
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) is urging individuals to contact their Senators and request changes to the Better Care Reconciliation Act (BCRA) of 2017, which is the Senate's version of the health care bill that passed the House of Representatives. Sometime during the week of July 24, a planned Senate vote could repeal or replace the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare). The USCCB notes that the BCRA leaves intact the harmful restructuring of Medicaid funding that will result in billions of dollars in cuts to a program that provides health care for millions of financially vulnerable Americans. Because Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has stated that he intends to bring it to a vote sometime this week,
calling your Senators in the next several days could make a serious impact on the final text of the bill.
The USCCB recommends the following three changes to the Senate health care bill:
1. Strip out harmful changes to Medicaid that will wreak havoc on the poor and vulnerable, including the per capita caps;
2. Ensure that any health care legislation includes protections for the unborn in all respects, including Hyde amendment prohibitions on use of federal funds on abortions or plans that cover it;
3. Include conscience protections for those involved in the health care system.
