Congrats! WCAAP Awarded Inspire Change Award for the Second Time in Two Years
Late last month, the Washington Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (WCAAP), was awarded the 2024 Inspire Change Award at the American Academy of Pediatrics' Annual Leadership Conference. The WCAAP first received the Inspire Change Award in 2022, the first year the AAP district vice chairs granted the recognition.
“The WCAAP Equitable Care Committee is humbled and honored that the Chapter has received the Inspire Change Award for a second time,” says Kathleen Kieran, MD, MSc, MME, FAAP, FACS, and co-chair of WCAAP’s Equitable Care Committee. “As Committee Co-Chairs, we would especially like to recognize our Committee members, whose tireless advocacy and passion for equity have propelled this work forward.”

Equitable Care Question of the Month
Five-year-old Sophie comes in with her mother for her annual wellness exam. It's early summer and Sophie’s mom worries aloud about the upcoming wildfire season, which seems to be worsening each year. Their rental home doesnʻt have air conditioning and summer temperatures are increasing in your region, which makes it harder for them to stay indoors with windows closed.

Vax Corner: Back to School! Vaccines! And Exemption Forms!
Maria Huang, MD, FAAP
Vaccine Committee Co-Chair
As much as we would love all WA kids to be fully immunized, we know there remains a sizable vaccine-hesitant population. WA state law allows parents or guardians to exempt their child from the school or childcare immunization requirements by claiming personal/philosophical, religious, or medical reasons. (MMR may not be exempted for personal/philosophical reasons). So to save the time and sanity of our hardworking school nurses, when we are asked to sign Certificate of Exemption (COE) forms, let’s do it correctly. Read on to learn answers to the most common FAQs (and for additional resources)!

WCAAP's HPV@9 Program and Member Doug Eisert, MD, FAAP Featured in AMA News Wire
Doug Eisert, MD, practices in a rural part of Washington state where vaccination rates for human papillomavirus (HPV) are low and the incidence and mortality rate of HPV-related cancer is higher than suburban and urban areas.
“HPV vaccination is different from others because there is more hesitancy regarding this compared to the other standard vaccinations,” said Dr. Eisert, a pediatrician with the East Wenatchee Clinic at Confluence Health, which is a member of the AMA Health System Program that provides enterprise solutions to equip leadership, physicians and care teams with resources to help drive the future of medicine.
Dr. Eisert played a key leadership role in two immunization collaboratives sponsored by the Washington Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Together, they’ve made a significant clinical impact on vaccine rates in Wenatchee Valley, Washington. “WA-CHIP” aims to increase vaccination rates for children and adolescents, whereas “HPV@9” focuses on increasing HPV vaccination for children 9–10 years old.

Still Time to Fill Out HCA's Paying for Value Survey
The Health Care Authority (HCA) is seeking provider participation in their annual Paying for Value survey. The survey helps track progress toward the statewide goal of paying for health and value, rather than paying for volume of care.
Because provider success is at the heart of value-based care, provider input is essential. Your participation in the survey will help HCA understand your experiences with value-based payment and will inform how we approach value-based initiatives in the future.
HCA invites all provider organizations across Washington State to participate, including hospitals, health care systems, clinics, tribal health care, behavioral health care, and more.
The survey is open until 11:59 p.m. on Saturday, August 31. It is designed to be filled out by an administrative leader, with only one response per organization, and should take less than 30 minutes to complete.
