3rd Annual Wisconsin Aviation Conference
The 63rd Annual Wisconsin Aviation Conference was held at Glacier Canyon Resort in the Wisconsin Dells from May 6th-8th.
The Conference was attended by over 200 individuals related to aeronautical services and facilities throughout Wisconsin, the Midwest and across the country.
During the Conference, several General and Concurrent Professional Sessions were held. These sessions included notable guest speakers such as WI LT. Governor Rebecca Kleefisch, FAA Regional Administrator Rebecca MacPherson, FAA GLC Airports Division Director Sue Mowery-Schalk, WBOA Director David Green, GL AOPA Manager Kyle Lewis, and WAMA President Kurt Stanich, amongst many others.
During the Conference, WAMA also recognized and awarded the following:
$3,000 in College Scholarships ($1,000 each) to: Aaron Wahlgren, Kenosha, WI, Trey Mattson, Bay City, WI and Peyton May, Pleasant Prairie, WI
$1,000 Professional Development Grant to Todd Norrell, Chippewa Valley Regional Airport

Meet the New WAMA Board Member

Southern Wisconsin Regional Airport
Hello to all! I was recently selected to serve on our Wisconsin Airport Management Association board. I'm very honored and excited to help any way that I can. However, many of you are probably reading this and asking, "Who is this guy?" Thus, let me offer a brief summary of my past.
After growing up in southern Wisconsin and graduating Milton High School, I left the family farm. Anything had to be better than milking cows and working 7 days a week. After working for 18 months in a factory, I found myself saying "anything had to be better than working in a factory!" So, I enlisted in the United States Air Force. One enlistment turned into another and before I knew it, I was retiring after 27 years in the spring of 2016. Seven of those years on active duty and twenty as an active member in the WI Air National Guard. During that time, I was an Air Traffic Controller, Airport Manager, and Operations Superintendent. It was really a great ride that I'm very proud of and I'm also thankful for the opportunity to serve. Not once in that time did I ever think that something else out there had to be better!
I had traveled quite a bit my last few years in my military role, so I was enjoying the chance to stay home and spent time with family for a few months. Out of the blue, I received a phone call and asked if I'd want a contract job working back at Volk Field where I had worked for many years. I worked for a year managing the Special Use Airspace the military planes use over central Wisconsin. That was a good job, but admittedly started asking that old question from above. Then by chance, I heard about an opening near my home town.
Since the week after Thanksgiving, I've been fortunate to be the Airport Manager at Southern Wisconsin Regional Airport, Janesville. Many of you probably knew the longtime Director there, Mr. Ron Burdick. Ron's retirement provided an opening and fortunately some people in Rock County took a chance. Military and civilian run airports are similar but very different. The learning curve has been steep, but I have many good people surrounding me. I'm very excited to serve in the community that I grew up in and I'm even more excited about the possibilities JVL has to offer in southern Wisconsin.
I look forward to meeting more of you around the state and serving our association the best that I can. I've been too busy the first six months to wonder if anything else is better out there. Although I did think briefly around mid-April while we were plowing snow AGAIN, that some airport in the south must need a manager. Despite the snow, working at an airport is a great job and still beats milking cows.

Basic ASOS Onsite Training
July 17-18, 2018 at the Green Bay-Austin Straubel International Airport.
The two-day Basic ASOS School is designed for individuals who are relatively new to airport operations, or have not attended a Basic ASOS before and are currently working in airport management, planning or operations. Through prepared presentations instructed by industry professionals, the Basic ASOS School will cover the following elements of Part 139 (subject to change): 14 CFR Part 139 Requirements, Records, Paved/Safety Areas, Markings, Signs & Lighting, ARFF, AEP, Self-Inspection Program.

Airfield Lighting & Signage Surplus
The La Crosse Regional Airport and the South Wood County Airport-Alexander Field in Wisconsin Rapids are both undergoing lighting/signage projects this summer that will convert their existing services to LED. At the conclusion of this project, they will have a surplus of current issue signs, lights, regulators and control boards. Please contact
