Volusia Online Learning Community Brief
Monday, October 30, 2023
Volusia Online Learning Community Member,

One of the great pleasures of being the principal of VOL is the opportunity to work with a myriad of talented, dedicated professionals. One of the most dedicated and knowledgeable administrators I’ve ever had the chance to work with is our very own Melissa Shaw. For those who don’t know her, Ms. Shaw has been with VOL since 2020. Over the past few years, she has predominantly worked with our outstanding elementary program, but this year I asked her to help lead the entire full-time school. As with everything I ask her to do, Ms. Shaw has taken my challenge and run with it. From scheduling, to in-person events, testing, and graduation, Ms. Shaw has a hand in our policies and implementation. This week, I asked Ms. Shaw to share some updates for our full-time families. Please take the time to read her words below.

Dr. Serianni

From Ms. Shaw, Full-Time School Assistant Principal

Did you know that Volusia Online Learning is not only a Volusia County School, but also a franchise of FLVS? As such, our students and teachers adhere to Volusia County Schools’ academic calendar and deadlines.

All full-time students should continue to work in their courses on a regular basis. This means that students should be reviewing course content and submitting assignments regularly. All work must be completed and submitted no later than December 15that 3:00 PM to be reflected on your child’s Quarter 2 report card. Report card grades will be issued based on student’s progress or lack thereof for each course listed on their schedule (this includes special area and elective courses). FLVS will not allow our teachers to issue a grade if a student has not completed their required DBAs or assessments. Please have your child schedule their required DBAs early to ensure they are complete.

Parents can access their child’s performance and progress 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in the FLVS platform.  Please take note: when reviewing your child’s course progress in FLVS, students need to complete 100% of Semester 1 course work by December 15th.

This year, Coach Burnam-Hoyt is excited to host social events/activities for VOL students. These activities are designed to provide VOL students, families and staff the opportunity to gather and participate in a variety of events. These events are designed to promote physical and fun activities for all ages. The benefits of being physically active improve brain health, encourage positive social interactions, enhance your mood, boost confidence, generate more physical energy, and improve overall ability to participate in everyday activities. Please complete the brief survey to help us guide our upcoming VOL Unplugged events and activities to be more convenient, inclusive, and accessible. Get Unplugged! Stay Active! Stay Healthy!

Thank you to all our students and families that joined us for Trunk or Treat and participated in Red Ribbon Week earlier this month. As you can see from the pictures below, we had a blast! Thank you for reading and have a great week!

FLVS Update
FLORIDA VIRTUAL SCHOOL

Communication is key to success!

Regular communication between a student’s parent/guardian and their teacher is important for student success. Being involved and aware of how students are progressing and performing in their courses.

  • Are they on pace in completing their coursework? All course homepages show the module and lessons that students should currently be working on. This information is updated weekly by the teacher.
  • How is the student performing on their coursework? Grades earned can be viewed by clicking on “GRADEBOOK” on the top navigation bar within the course.
  • Need to contact the teacher? Quickly email them from the student’s dashboard by clicking on the orange “TEACHER” button on the course tile. You can also find the teacher’s name, contact information, and office hours on the course homepage.

Also, be sure you remember to check your email daily, as teachers send important progress updates, course announcements, and student work feedback to the parent/guardian email address listed on the student’s FLVS account profile.
