Volunteers needed! Provide legal advice to domestic violence survivors in rural WNC

Serve remotely!

Are you an attorney experienced with Domestic Violence Protective Order (50B) hearings? We need your help!

We are facing an overwhelming need for legal help from domestic violence survivors in rural western North Carolina. Help us meet the need by providing one hour of legal advice by phone to survivors preparing to proceed pro se with their 50B hearings.

Here's how it works:

  • Sign up for a two-week period during which you have a flexible schedule.
  • During that period, we will refer one pre-screened client to you, providing you with the basic facts of their case and any county-specific information you should share with them.
  • Call the client within three business days and provide up to one hour of legal advice.

That's it! There's no simpler way to make such a meaningful difference in someone's life. Questions? Contact probono@legalaidnc.org.

Jessica O. Wilkie · Hansen, Howell & Wilkie, PLLC

Raleigh

Jessica Wilkie, partner in the Raleigh law firm of Hansen, Howell & Wilkie, PLLC, and head of the firm's real estate department, recently helped an heir-property owner save his home from foreclosure.

Our client inherited the property from one of his parents upon their death. Unbeknownst to him, the property was secured by three deeds of trust and a mortgage modification.

Years after inheriting the property, he received a letter stating that foreclosure proceedings would begin if he failed to make payment by a certain date. Facing the loss of his home and unsure what to do, he came to Legal Aid of North Carolina for help.

We referred our client to Jessica, a pro bono volunteer with our Heir Property Pro Bono Project, which helps heir property owners establish clear title to their homes and land.

Jessica got to work, figuring out what the client had to do to save his home. Her efforts paid off. Last month, Jessica informed us that our client was able to pay the delinquent taxes owed on the property, nullifying the foreclosure proceedings and allowing him to record a deed that put the property in his name.

"She really did her thing!" our client said about Jessica's service. Thanks to her, he can sleep safe and sound in the home that is now unquestionably his.
