Breton Bay Oyster Planting – Sept. 21

We are gearing up for our third annual “One Million Oysters for Breton Bay” planting event on Saturday, September 21 at 10 am (rain date: September 22 at 10 am) at Abell’s Wharf, and we hope you’ll join us!

Breton Bay was originally slated for large-scale oyster restoration, but due to the lack of oysters during surveying, the State of Maryland abandoned large-scale Breton Bay oyster restoration and decided to restore the Manokin River instead. Now, Friends of St. Clements Bay, the St. Mary’s River Watershed Association, and our local community are stepping up to fill this gap.

If you can help before the main event, meet us at 8 am at the St. Mary’s College River Center to load oyster bags from pallets in the St. Mary’s River onto trailers. Volunteers will be in the water moving bags of oysters (likely containing critters like eels, crabs, and jellyfish). Water shoes, long pants, and long sleeves are required. You will get wet during this activity. If you can attend, please indicate that on your sign-up

This event is co-hosted by Friends of St. Clements Bay and the St. Mary’s River Watershed Association.

Thank You to Our Partners!
