"Go volunteer. You will feel better about life."

Volunteer of the Year - Catherine Paez

The Volunteer Center is proud to celebrate our volunteers. Each year, National Volunteer Week shines a light on the people and causes that inspire us to serve, recognizing and thanking volunteers who lend their time, talent, and voice to make a difference in their communities. Join us in saying THANK YOU to some of our most dedicated volunteers!

Golden Girls - Sue & Judy Golden

Food4Kids (FFK) Packers and Sisters Sue & Judy Golden have been volunteering for seven and four years!

Sue, “I love the hands-on involvement. With so many charities you write a check and that’s it. With Food4Kids I get immediate satisfaction of seeing my efforts every week and a real personal joy. And I am part of a group of wonderful people making the world a little better!”

Judy, “You can thank Sue for getting me involved. She always spoke so favorably about Food4Kids that I ‘tagged’ along to help and was hooked. There is always a feeling of satisfaction seeing all the racks filled with bags of food for the kids when we’ve finished." Every week, FFK Bags are packed to perfection, and when we are running low on food items Sue & Judy along with their friend JoAnn Frisch help stock our shelves as well! Thank you for your many years of volunteering and many more to come!

Impact Maker - Samantha

Samantha, a freshman at Torrance High School, became part of our Volunteer Center community through our Impact Makers program. During our annual food drive, she and fellow Impact Maker volunteers dedicated their time to sorting, dating, and organizing thousands of pounds of food at our Food For Kids pantry.

Following the completion of the Impact Makers program, Samantha expressed a desire to continue her service with our organization. Now, she generously contributes her time once a week, lending support to various projects throughout our office. Samantha shared how “Volunteering at the volunteer center makes me feel more connected to the community while also grateful for the opportunity to be helping others.”

EasterSeals SoCal

Each day, dedicated volunteers from Easterseals grace our office with their invaluable support at the Volunteer Center. Their exceptional efforts in sorting food donations for our Food For Kids pantry and maintaining stocked shelves for our packers have been truly remarkable.

Additionally, Easterseals play a vital role in supporting programs like Operation Teddy Bear by assembling Rek-n-Rek math tools that are distributed to first graders. They are truly a joy to work with and make us a more connected and resilient society.

Julia has been an integral part of our Volunteer Center since March 2023, serving as a volunteer administrative assistant. Her dedication, enthusiasm, and proactive approach have significantly enhanced our programs and projects. Julia's impact extends beyond her own efforts—she has actively engaged her family in our volunteer activities. Her husband Chris, along with daughters Ashley and Alyssa, have joined in, embodying their collective empathy through action.

Julia's contributions and her family's involvement exemplify the spirit of volunteerism that lies at the heart of our organization. We deeply appreciate Julia and her family for their outstanding commitment and generosity.

Food For Kids Drivers

Our Food For Kids program relies on drivers each week to deliver our food bags to our partner schools & organizations throughout the South Bay and Long Beach Communities! We want to shed a spotlight on some of our most dedicated drivers.

Bob Habel & Jim Specht

If you are familiar with Torrance, you know what a privilege it is for the Volunteer Center to have both of these men as our Food For Kids Drivers!

You will see them around town volunteering for other organizations, supporting local businesses, and making sure Torrance remains the warm close-knit town that we all love.

Bob and Jim have been unwavering in times of transitions and changes, making sure our FFK families have the nutrition they need each Friday! Thank you so much for your many years of volunteering and helping advocate for us in the Torrance community!

ICAN Torrance

ICAN California Abilities Network’s Volunteer Club joined our volunteer team in 2024. They have been a huge help in delivering to two different schools on Thursdays.

The ICAN group has also jumped in at various points to help pick up large donations in the community and ensure our pantry remains stocked. We are grateful for their volunteerism and passion to spread empathy and kindness.

Sarah Chen

Sarah has been volunteering at the Volunteer Center as a food packer since 2018 and then started delivering food to one of our San Pedro Schools in 2022!

We appreciate her flexibility with any changes the schools have on their delivery days. She helped fill our volunteering void during the pandemic, and has been a reliable volunteer whenever we have a need!

“I love volunteering with Food For Kids because it's a wonderful organization that helps our underserved local communities, whether it's providing food or needed school materials. It feels good that we're all working toward a common goal of helping kids and their families.”

Phelps Family

Parents to our very own Jon Phelps. Ron & Kristin Phelps started volunteering about 2 years ago serving our Long Beach Homeless and Foster families. They have lived their entire lives in Long Beach, both attending LBUSD schools.

When the opportunity to serve Long Beach families facing homelessness, foster care, and food insecurities was available, they signed up to drive our bags to Long Beach. They also make sure that one of the favorite “Happy” items in the bag, cereal, is always available for the kids! We are so grateful for their enthusiastic love they pour into the city of Long Beach!
