First She Slays 5K Gave the Community a Sacred Space to Support Others Beyond Words

From the crack of dawn, everyone could feel the anticipation in the air for our inaugural She Slays 5K held last month to raise awareness and support for women who have been touched by cancer. From the participants to the organizers at iDaph Events, everyone showed up with their whole heart and infectious energy.

The community truly rallied together for this event. Witnessing our Cancer Center team run and walk alongside the very patients they care for was awe-inspiring and yet another reminder of what makes Pardee Hospital truly a community hospital.

This race wasn’t just about crossing the finish line; it served as a powerful platform for participants to honor their loved ones who have faced or are currently battling cancer.

In fact, more skin cancers are diagnosed in the U.S. each year than all other cancers combined.

Consider getting screened if you:

  • Were previously diagnosed with skin cancer
  • Have a strong family history of skin cancer
  • Have a history of excessive sun exposure or indoor training
  • Have fair skin
  • Have many or atypical moles.

Grant Empowers Pardee Pain Center with Cutting-Edge Pain Management Tool

Thanks to a generous grant from the Perry N Rudnick Endowment, the Pardee Pain Center has acquired a powerful new tool to aid local residents in managing pain through nonsurgical means.

Known as Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA), this innovative technique utilizes heat to target and destroy tissue. In RFA, radio waves are directed through a precisely positioned needle to heat a specific area of the nerve, effectively interrupting pain signals before they reach the brain. This method is particularly beneficial for individuals suffering from chronic pain conditions, such as those affecting the neck, lower back, or arthritic joints, which may have been unresponsive to other treatments.

Karen Murvine, Clinic Coordinator for Pardee Pain Center, highlights the transformative potential of RFA in alleviating chronic pain. She explains how the procedure can significantly reduce or even eliminate pain, improve daily function, decrease reliance on pain medications, and potentially defer the need for surgical intervention.

Witnessing the positive impact of RFA on patients' lives is a source of great joy for the medical staff, as it restores a sense of happiness and relief to individuals who have long endured pain.

The Perry N. Rudnick Endowment serves Western North Carolina, with particular attention to organizations within Buncombe, Henderson, Polk, and Transylvania Counties. Grants from the Endowment typically support specific projects benefiting the local community.

Taking a Seat for Patient Comfort:

Support Needed for Last Two Infusion Chairs at Pardee Cancer Center

Chemotherapy infusion sessions are an integral aspect of cancer therapy. However, these sessions often demand prolonged periods of seated treatment.

Recognizing the paramount importance of patient comfort, the Pardee Hospital Foundation remains committed to funding Pardee Cancer Center's need for five cutting-edge infusion chairs.

Thanks to the kindness of previous benefactors, the Foundation has taken a substantial leap forward in improving the patient journey at the Cancer Center. We are seeking support for the purchase of the final two chairs.

These infusion chairs serve as crucial allies in alleviating discomfort, minimizing pressure points, and ensuring optimal posture for patients undergoing therapy. Moreover, they enable healthcare professionals seamless access to patients, striking a delicate balance between patient comfort and clinical efficiency.

Your contribution to this initiative is instrumental in reshaping the patient experience at the Pardee Cancer Center. Your generosity will resonate deeply with those navigating the challenges of cancer, offering them a sanctuary of comfort and optimism during their treatment sessions.

Join us in our mission to acquire the final two chairs. Each chair cost $4,500

UNC Health Pardee Named in Top 100 Hospitals List for 2024

It takes a lot to be considered one of the top 100 hospitals in the United States and even more to be named a top teaching hospital. UNC Health Pardee not only makes the 2024 list but also lands squarely in the top 25 for excellence as a teaching hospital.

Fortune, in collaboration with PINC AI, a healthcare intelligence platform, named its top 100 hospitals in the U.S. on April 16th. The "Fortune/PINC AI Top Hospital List" is based on an analysis of Medicare data, including clinical outcomes, operational efficiency, patient experience, and financial health.

Researchers from PINC AI analyzed data from 2,601 acute-care, nonfederal U.S. hospitals, including small, medium, and large community hospitals and teaching and major teaching hospitals. The analysis included a survey-based measure to capture the hospital's contribution to health and health equity in its community.

The top hospitals outperformed their peers in all 10 key performance indicators.

The hospitals were honored in five categories: top large, medium, and small community hospitals, and top major teaching and top teaching hospitals.

UNC Health Pardee was named a top teaching hospital. Teaching hospitals partner with medical and nursing schools, education programs, and research centers to improve health care through learning and research.
