Pedal to the Metal: The power of selling unreserved at the auction

In the world of collector car auctions, the decision to sell your prized possession unreserved can be a game-changer. While the prospect of letting your car go to the highest bidder without a minimum price might make your heart skip a beat, there are undeniable advantages to taking this bold approach.

Maximized Exposure

Selling your collector car unreserved ensures that it will garner maximum attention from potential buyers. Without a reserve price limiting interest, enthusiasts at the auction and around the globe are free to bid, driving up competition and ultimately increasing the final sale price.

Competitive Bidding

By eliminating a reserve price, you invite genuine competition among bidders who are motivated to secure the vehicle. This competitive atmosphere often leads to spirited bidding wars, resulting in a final sale price that reflects the true market value of the vehicle.

Transparency and Trust

Auctioning your collector car unreserved demonstrates your confidence in its quality and market appeal. This transparency fosters trust among buyers, reassuring them that they are participating in a fair and honest transaction.

Faster Sales Process

With no reserve price to negotiate or wait for, selling your collector car unreserved can expedite the sales process. Once the hammer falls and the highest bid is accepted, the sale is final, allowing you to move forward without delay.

Potential for Surprises

While it may seem daunting to part with your car without a safety net, selling unreserved opens the door to unexpected surprises. Bidders may exceed your expectations, resulting in a higher sale price than you anticipated.

Access to Serious Buyers

Serious collectors and enthusiasts are often drawn to unreserved auctions, knowing that they have a genuine opportunity to purchase a coveted vehicle without artificial barriers. This can attract a higher caliber of buyers who are eager to add your car to their collection.

Are you putting a ceiling on your collector's value?

Don’t limit your collector’s value by continuing to advertise privately after consigning to the auction.

Consigning your vehicle to a live auction is an opportunity to reach a worldwide audience of serious buyers in a competitive atmosphere—potentially resulting in a higher sale price than private sales or online marketplaces.

When consigning your vehicle to a live auction, we recommend committing wholeheartedly to the process. Resist the temptation to market your car privately and list a price, because it can hinder the bidding momentum and ultimately lower your final sale price. Consider the following:

Continuing to market your vehicle in online platforms after signing up for a live auction may seem like a way to increase exposure, but it can work against you.

  • Collector cars are a passion for many, and enthusiasts are a tightly interconnected community. Savvy buyers are watching our online platforms for consignments, and if they see your collector advertised elsewhere privately, you've just tipped your hand and showed the maximum price you'll accept to part with your collector.

Telling people that if you don't sell your car privately that you will be selling it by auction isn't a strong strategy.

  • It might push a buyer to make a purchase, but can you be confident you got true value for your vehicle? Or did the buyer commit to the purchase to avoid competition and potentially paying more at auction?

The beauty of live auctions lies in the bidding process itself.

  • With the excitement at auction where multiple bidders are vying to outdo each other, the final price can often exceed expectations. By committing fully to the auction and refraining from outside marketing, you allow this competitive atmosphere to work in your favor.

If you have questions about the advantages of selling at auction, let us know.

We asked Coast2Coast owners Craig Collingridge and Des Plewman: "What was a memorable or standout moment from your experience in the collector car auction industry?"

"Honestly, every vehicle I sell at a collector car auction is memorable. I've never met a muscle car I didn't like and they are always fun to sell, but I just love selling each and every car and getting as much money as I can for every consigner.

There is nothing more satisfying than having a customer come up to me with a big smile after an auction and say 'Thank you so much. I could tell how hard you guys worked for me, you got me more money than I could get selling it privately - and you did it without any hassle or stress for me.' That's a real rush for me."

I was selling a mid-60s Mustang that was totally restored back to factory original, and fully documented right from new.

When we reached the reserve price that the seller was willing to let his car go for, he walked out in front of his car and clapped his hands. When we announced the car would be selling unreserved, it really took off and the seller stepped forward and did a few big fist pumps. When it finally sold, I could hear him celebrating beside the auction stand. It’s a great feeling being able to do that for someone.”
