National Men's Health Month 2022
Throughout June, Men’s Health Month aims to encourage boys and men to take charge of their overall health by implementing healthy living decisions. This year, as the country has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, it is crucial that men get regular checkups and be aware of the risks for their age, ethnicity, and lifestyle. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 14.9% of men aged 18 and over are in fair or poor health. During Men’s Health Month, we urge men to take steps to enrich their health and wellness through proper screenings and care. Click on a photo for more information.

June is Alzheimer's Awareness Month

Worldwide, 55 million people are living with Alzheimer's and other dementias.
Alzheimer’s disease is a degenerative brain disease and the most common form of dementia. Dementia is not a specific disease. It's an overall term that describes a group of symptoms.
10 Early Signs and Symptoms of Alzheimer's
Your memory often changes as you grow older. But memory loss that disrupts daily life is not a typical part of aging.
Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI)
Approximately 12-18% of people age 60 or older are living with MCI. People with MCI may go on to develop dementia, while others will not.

Virginia Relay Remote Conference Captioning (RCC) services will be available for this session.

Acts of targeted violence against houses of worship are a real—and potentially growing—problem in the United States and a top priority for the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). CISA has prepared this comprehensive security guide based on original analysis to help houses of worship develop a comprehensive security strategy to mitigate future incidents.
In this security guide, CISA analyzed ten years of targeted attacks on houses of worship to provide context to the enterprise-wide security recommendations outlined in the previous chapters. The case studies reviewed are examples of the breadth of threats a house of worship faces daily.
We would like to hear your thoughts on the overall health of our State.

FEMA Public Assistance for COVID-19
Key Deadlines Approaching
Attention state, local, and tribal governments as well as private non-profit organizations, including houses of worship.

FEMA has recently established key deadlines for applying for FEMA Public Assistance, for eligible work that your organization may have performed that was required to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
July 1, 2022 marks the deadline for eligible applicants to submit a Request for Public Assistance (RPA). An RPA is not an application for funding, but the first level of review for applicant eligibility for the PA program. RPAs must be submitted through the FEMA Grants Portal

Eligible applicants include:
  • State, local, and tribal governments;
  • Certain private non-profit organizations, including houses of worship

If an RPA is not submitted by July 1, 2022 - then the applicant will not be able to apply for a grant through the PA program to reimburse for eligible COVID-19 expenditures.

VDEM and FEMA encourage eligible applicants to submit an RPA if you have at least $3,500 in eligible COVID-19 expenditures.  Once an RPA is submitted, and approved by VDEM and FEMA, a FEMA Program Delivery Manager (PDMG) will be assigned to walk you through the application process.

The Longest Day

The Longest Day is the day with the most light — the summer solstice. On June 21, people from across the world will fight the darkness of Alzheimer's through a fundraising activity of their choice.

Whether you're participating at home, online or in-person, we have plenty of fun ideas to engage family and friends in The Longest Day.

Learn more about the day here. Found out how you can participate: give, become an advocate, or volunteer.
Skin Cancer Awareness

Overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays causes most cases of melanoma, the deadliest kind of skin cancer. To lower your skin cancer risk, protect your skin from the sun and avoid indoor tanning.

Summer is full of outdoor activities. You probably put sunscreen on yourself and your kids when you go to the pool or the beach. But do you know you should protect your skin with more than just sunscreen anytime you’re outside?

2022 United States Monkeypox Response and Recommendations

Scientists at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are tracking multiple cases of monkeypox that have been reported in several countries that don’t normally report monkeypox, including the United States. CDC is working with state and local health officials to identify people who may have been in contact, so they can monitor their health.

Learn more about what you should do here.
