Norfolk Community Leaders Unite to Address Coronavirus Testing Stigma

Norfolk, Va – Recent data has shown African-Americans and other minority groups are at a greater risk for severe illness from the coronavirus. As a result, community leaders of faith-based organizations in Norfolk have come together to create  this YouTube video  to encourage the community to get tested. The video shows local leaders getting tested, disproving any misconceptions about the test; the coronavirus test is safe, painless, and is completed in just a few seconds. It is highly recommended to get tested if an individual has symptoms or may have been exposed to someone with the virus. Testing, along with other public health recommendations such as
wearing a cloth face covering in public, social distancing, and proper hand washing, will help reduce the spread of coronavirus in the community. Learn more.

Virginia has announced a phased reopening of K12 schools, which gradually permits in-person instruction to resume while prioritizing the health and safety of students and staff. In order to minimize the disparate impacts closures have had on students, this approach prioritizes the needs of students who have been most impacted by school building closures, and for whom in-person instruction is most beneficial. It simultaneously recognizes the disruption closures have had on all students and seeks to bring them back to the classroom as soon as is safe and practicable.

July is  National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month . OMH will highlight resources to support mental and emotional wellbeing while following the  social distancing guidelines  to stop the spread of COVID-19.

According to the  Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality , racial and ethnic minority groups experience disparities in access to mental health services and quality of care which impacts managing their emotional wellness and contributes to poor mental health outcomes, including suicide.
Mental health disparities in racial and ethnic minority communities can be left unaddressed with inadequate culturally and linguistically appropriate care. The OMH  T hink Cultural Health  e-learning courses are designed to help health professionals provide culturally and linguistically appropriate services (CLAS). The e-learning program offers free and accredited e-learning courses, including a course tailored for  behavioral health professionals .

Visit our  National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month webpage , also available in  Spanish , for downloadable materials and mental health resources.
