July Is Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month
To continue the visionary work of Bebe Moore Campbell, each year Mental Health America (MHA) develops a public education campaign dedicated to addressing the mental health needs of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC).
Our 2021 toolkit examines community-developed systems of support created to fill in gaps within traditional systems that may overlook cultural and historical factors that impede BIPOC and QTBIPOC mental health. It explores three topic areas: community care, self-directed care, and cultural care, and why these types of care are valid and valuable choices people can make for their mental health.

Virginia Department of Health (VDH) Arthritis Program
The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) Arthritis Program is entering its fourth year as one of 13 states receiving a five year Center’s for Disease Control and Prevention Grant to support activities to improve arthritis management and the quality of life of people with arthritis. Two evidence-based programs that VDH will expand to new areas of the state are the Walk with Ease (WWE) and Chronic Disease Self-Management Programs (CDSMP).
WWE was developed by the Arthritis Foundation as 6-week program that meets three times a week for an hour. WWE gradually lets you build up to walking, reduce pain, and improve overall health. If you can be on your feet for 10 minutes without increased pain or you just want to feel better, you can WWE. WWE can be done as a self or leader led program.
VDH supports WWE through providing leader training for group led programs, and WWE guide books for all participants.
CDSMP series of workshops for people with arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, lung disease, and other health problems. This 6-week program meets for two hours once a week and was developed by Stanford University. CDSMP helps you learn ways to control pain and other symptoms, get around better, and stay independent. It is offered though in-person, virtual, or phone with tool kit sessions. VDH supports CDSMP through providing leader training, and “Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions” books for all participants.
