Bedford County schools cancel bus routes amidst driver shortage

Bedford County bus routes are still being impacted as they continue to deal with bus driver shortages. Monday, at least five routes were canceled. Parents will find out what routes will be affected Tuesday on Monday night. Substitute drivers and bus shop mechanics have all stepped up in order to fill the eight empty positions.

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Richmond Public School leaders are trying to turn around a bad report card. RPS Superintendent Jason Kamras says the learning situation is dire. Board members and the state are hopeful the plan in place will help.

Norfolk School Board accepting applications for vacant Ward 4 seat

Those who are in Ward 4 who are interested in serving on the board for the remainder of the seat's term should apply by Tuesday, which is the deadline.

Hopewell School District considers requiring COVID vaccine for athletes in certain sports

As we continue living through a pandemic, school districts in the area are working to navigate what's appropriate for teachers and staff when it comes to vaccines. For Hopewell Schools, that means the possibility of soon requiring vaccines for student-athletes who take part in what leaders call close contact sports.

Since virus hit, Virginia school enrollment has slipped nearly 4%

Enrollment in Virginia public schools dropped again this fall and is down more than 46,000 students since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. That means the state's public schools have 3.6% fewer students now than before COVID-19 hit.

Virginia Beach School Board to discuss weapons ban policy

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - A controversial policy has some people in Virginia Beach planning to rally outside of Tuesday night's school board meeting. The board is set to discuss banning weapons on school property and at school-sponsored events. It's already against federal law to bring a weapon on school grounds.

Halifax County superintendent announces retirement

Halifax County Superintendent Dr. Mark Lineburg is planning to retire Feb. 17. He first joined Halifax County Public Schools in May of 2017. "This was solely my decision," Lineburg said Monday afternoon. "I am interested in stepping out of the spotlight and be an educator."

Roanoke County teachers share concerns about low morale

ROANOKE CO., Va. (WDBJ) - A group of Roanoke County teachers took concerns to administrators Monday, after a bonus for one group of educators raised concerns among others. The Roanoke County School Board recently approved a $1200 bonus for each employee. The board also approved an additional $2300 incentive to help recruit and retain special education teachers.

Fairfax schools will return two books to shelves after complaints over sexual content

Fairfax County Public Schools hasdecided to return two books to its high school libraries, following a review intocomplaints thatthe books contained sexually explicit language and scenes that weren't appropriate for a juvenile audience, the school system announced Tuesday.

Enrollment slumps at Henrico Public Schools

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. - Enrollment in Henrico Schools took a nosedive last year as the COVID-19 pandemic caused monumental disruptions to education. In September, schools fully reopened and welcomed students back - most of whom hadn't been inside of a school building in more than 500 days.
