Dollars for drivers: Roanoke, Roanoke County seeking to fill bus jobs

The Roanoke and Roanoke County school systems are offering cash incentives to try to fill bus driver vacancies. The transportation contractor for Roanoke City Public Schools announced a hiring bonus of $4,000 and a job fair later this month to receive applications.

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - During an RPS budget meeting Wednesday, talks shifted towards the future of the now condemned William Fox Elementary School following last week's massive fire. Norfolk schools proposed facility plan aims to consolidate aging buildings

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - A proposed facility plan to consolidate and demolish aging buildings in Norfolk Public Schools has people in the community asking for a say in the process. One phase of the draft plan looks at closing Madison Alternative School and moving Madison students to Lindenwood Elementary.

Staunton superintendent calls for Va. to lift funding cap amid teacher shortage crisis

STAUNTON, Va. (WVIR) - The "Great Resignation" is impacting businesses all across the country, including Staunton City Schools. The school district is dealing with a teacher shortage, and Superintendent Garett Smith says it is a crisis. Smith says schools are understaffed, teachers are underpaid and overworked, and there's no one to replace the teachers leaving the field.

Judge orders Loudoun Co. schools to lift mask requirement immediately as other districts prepare for changes | WTOP News

Several Northern Virginia school systems are taking a wait-and-see approach to a new law that bans mask mandates in state schools. One school system has announced plans to roll back its requirement, but that might not be soon enough for some parents.

Lincoln Terrace Elementary reading program hopes to shape young minds

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - "As part of the Gun Violence Prevention Commission, we did a lot of studying in the first year. One thing that became very clear is that there was a pipeline between children who were not reading well in early elementary school and ending up in the prison system or committing violent crimes," said Rabbi Kathy Cohen, a Commissioner on the City's Gun Violence Prevention Commission.

Program offers Lynchburg students bikes for good grades

One Community One Voice announced today that the Bank of the James is sponsoring the B. I. K. E. program at R. S. Payne Elementary School. The Believe In Kids Excelling Program gives students the opportunity to be rewarded with a bike for good grades, attendance and behavior in school.

Virginia Education Broadband Grant

Valued up to $30,000- Applications must be received by February 18, 2022

In honor of VSBA’s 115th Anniversary, a thank you for your work as school board members, and in service to Virginia’s children: Kajeet partnered with VSBA to announce the first-ever Virginia Education Broadband Grant program. This funding opportunity will help school board members continue the important work being done to ensure all students have digital learning access at school and at home.


In total, Kajeet will award over $250,000 in broadband services to Virginia school

boards to solve the digital divide and ensure that all students have access to learn, anytime, anywhere.


Kajeet will award 9 winners (one per VSBA region). Award winners will be announced at VSBA Regional meetings this Spring. To learn more information and to submit your application visit the link below.
