Despite pushback, Board of Ed accepts draft history standards for first review | The Virginia Board of Education voted to accept for first review the newest draft of Virginia's hotly debated history and social science standards Thursday on a 5-3 vote. President Daniel Gecker, Vice President Tammy Mann and board member Anne Holton, all appointees of former Govs. Ralph Northam and Terry McAuliffe, opposed moving forward with the proposal over concerns that the introductory pages are too “political.” | | |
Meat and cheese company sponsors charcuterie club at Monacan High School | RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Jack Cheatham, a senior at Monacan High School, wanted a way to bring his school together during the pandemic. "Charcuterie is awesome, and also, I noticed after COVID the school was a little bit more divided, there was a lot more cliques, and I wanted a way for people to meet new people, and I think this is a great way to do it," said Cheatham. | | |
Caroline School Board seats student representative | The Caroline County School Board seated a student representative last month, the division announced in its monthly newsletter. Caroline High School Junior Malayla Courtney was selected through an "extensive application and interview process" and was introduced to the community at the Jan. 23 School Board meeting. | | |
Virtual member: LCPS board member rarely attends meetings in person | For nearly 2.5 years, the presence of Denise Kofoid Corbo, At-Large, at Loudoun County Public Schools board meetings has been on a big screen. Corbo's virtual presence has worn thin with some board members including board Chairman Ian Serotkin, Blue Ridge, who has previously called on her to show up or quit. | | |

Ex-Richneck Elementary principal wasn't told of reports 6-year-old had gun, attorney says | RICHMOND - The lawyer for the former principal of Richneck Elementary School said Thursday her client was never told the 6-year-old who shot his first grade teacher may have had a gun at school that day. Pamela Branch, a Richmond attorney specializing in employment law, said some have inaccurately assumed that Briana Foster-Newton was among the school administrators reportedly warned about the firearm. | | |
F.C. School Board Votes 6-1 for Jerrod Anderson to Fill Slot | Out of a field of three applicants to replace departing member Phil Reitinger at a special meeting, the Falls Church School Board voted, 5-1, member David Ortiz dissenting, to elect Jerrod Anderson to fill the vacancy until the next regular election in November. There was a motion to appoint Anderson, the whole matter over in less than a minute. | | |

Citizens sound off on threats to Black SCW students | Parents, grandparents and concerned citizens attended the Middlesex County School Board's special called meeting to address racial threats on social media that allegedly occurred toward Black students at St. Clare Walker Middle School. Parent Michael Hammond addressed the board and spoke of language used on social media, which resulted in a Sheriff's Office investigation. | | |
